Just realized I have what's known as a 'Saratoga roof'? Solid metal roof panel, not glass? Sought-after option? Cool, another checkmark!

The Saratoga is the glass roof panel I believe. I'm guessing it's rare as I've never seen one. Do you mean your getting one as part of the deal?

Are you sure it's a Saratoga? They made plexiglass sunroof panels for several cars back in the day, but I've never heard of a metal one. Seems odd that someone would remove the factory fiberglass roof panel and replace it with something heavier like metal, but who knows...

Do you have any pics?

Ah, now I'm not so sure then. Seems like it's metal just like another body panel, but maybe it's fiberglass- I'll take a better look shortly. No good pics of it yet. I'm pretty sure it's not glass, interior panel on it is a hard vinyl cover- definitely can't see through it!

So is Saratoga glass or what?

It's clear(the panel) that's the only thing I know for sure. Zermatt says it's plexi so I go with him. I have only seen photo's never saw one on a car.

I got the impression he has a solid sunroof which is typical...I've never considered what they are made of?

Interesting, I've never had mine off on either of mine 951 and 944. So I don't know what they weigh? There kinda big and if made of metal I would imagine they'd be kinda heavy? Anybody got a magnet and a 951 nearby?

Mine's under a car cover still!

Sentinelist- you have the normal sunroof that 98% of 944s came with, made of fiberglass. The Saratoga top was a rare option made of clear, tinted plexiglass/glass(?).

The Saratoga top was an after market thing - not a factory option. And I think "Saratoga" was the brand... and it was made from glass. But there are also other "Saratoga knock-offs" made from plastic.

But, simply, if you can see through it, it's special. If you can't see through it, it's ordinary, and if you have no sunroof at all, it's pretty rare and would make a good track car.
