Let the fun begin!
I have had my 944 for about 5 days and it’s time for me to start working on it. I hope to use this thread to document the trials and tribulations of my “all original, never painted, collector grade, always garaged, fully serviced” (according to Fl dealer) 1990 guards Red 944S2 Cab. As I make progress I will post pics of my progress. To set the context, here are some close up of the car as it was delivered by the transporter:
Pics show evidence of poor paint job on the door - so much for "original"!
Car has been sitting outside, so much for "garage kept"
Even comes with the "aquarium option" - just add fish
...rust? what rust?
Feeble attempt to hide the rust...why bother!
more surface rust from the car sitting outside
Some evidence of fluid leaking - steering fluid
Suspension bushing are in good shape but shocks are shot
The good news is:
The top is in great shape and works.
The interior is nice and unworn
Now evident structure/ frame damage - some panels repainted (not well)
Rust is surface (other than the hole pictured)
Gearbox is quiet and shifts well
Engine compression is good

surface rust easy to clean up, throw some paint on everything while its apart. suspension/brakes etc looks nice in yellow or red
PS leaks are standard, if its not leaking, youre out of fluid
fishtank just has clogged drain, there are little rubber plugs in the body in that cavity you just pop out.
rust in the doorjamb? needs to be fixed asap

Start service
So now it's time to take things apart!!! Thanks to the great information on the list, I am planning a full service, this is in part because the service records provided appear to be phonies (see other post), some milk shake in the coolant, and other knocking noise during my brief 30 mile drive. Service will include:
New belts, rollers and seals
New chain and tensioner
Oil cooler seal replacement
New coil over suspension
Chipped ECU
All fluids, plugs etc...
Car on lift time to start...face lift!
Hammer always handy when things wont budge...
Hall sensor connector disintegrates...
As does the crank sensor (?) - hammer was not involved

More progress
things coming off and progress made
Plugs come out looking a little old, so much for recent service
Valve cover removed, cam lobes look good and initial assess of lash is positive, probably will be sent to powder coating...thinking black would be nice
Chain tensioner looks tired - new pads and chain on order
Injectors are out and will be shipped to RC engineering for cleaning and calibration.

I sure admire your attitude for what you thought you were getting and what you got.
It will clean up nicely it will just take longer than you originally planned.
We love these type of restoring posts.

More progress from weekend work
Power steering pump comes out, hoses have been leaking for a while
Heater valve display Exxon Valdez spill
Belt bearings and tensioners are off - all look is decent condition which is quite reassuring, no roughness or play - but not new as stated by the dealer.
Water pump is off
Water looks quite fresh and clean - hard to tell the age - clearly it is not new as claimed
Heat shields are a PITA to remove
but allow me to get to the oil cooler which is the certain reason for the milk shake like stuff in the the coolant (pic AFTER I cleaned it!)

Thanks for the support, I was quite disgusted when it arrived - especially considering how much I paid for it - but at the end of the day, I enjoy playing mechanic so other than a long list of parts and elbow grease, all will be good...oh and I have my attorney sending letters and filing quite a few documents with the court to assure that any profits the dealer made will go up in legal fees as he has already stated that "I ain't getting a dime back from him" LOL!!!

Part trois of the week end work
Balance shaft exposed
Seals on the crank and shafts don't appear to be leaking but plan to replace anyway
Starter motor looks a little rough and the car makes a lot of noise when cranked, probably needs to be replaced

Now the susppension
Struts have surface rust and are shot
Lower ball joints are still very stiff but the dust cover is gone - not sure if I can by replacements?
Rear shocks are out and still pretty good... and a small surprise, torn CV boot!
That's all in a day and a half's worth - now need to make my long parts list...car sleeping in good company

Looks like you are taking everything apart , may i suggest you do one job at the time , that way it's easier to put everything back together and you dont clutter up the garage with parts.

A coulpe of idea for your valves cover. But colour will be a question of taste I guess.

Thanks so much for the detailed pics!
( Looking forward to F1 racing next year in Austin? Forza Ferrari!)
Very troubling that a car with many corroded components was marketed as a creampuff...
Look forward to the asking vs selling price data if you'd oblige..
Subscribing.. Cheers!

Thanks for the tip, will ping them.. not taking everything apart yet it's pretty basic stuff as I am used to pulling engine out etc...and fortunately I have another garage that I use for storage of my other projects.
