Default 931 trans on Craigslist - Snail shell?

No affiliation. I know very little about these, but I've read the 931 had the strongest transmission of all of the 944 iterations. If true, someone might can pick up this pretty inexpensively.

I don't know much about their transmissions either, but I believe the stronger of the two the 924 got was a 4 speed

That's not a snailshell. That's the same trans early 944 NAs came with.

Only the 1980 931 and GTs got the snailshell and yes its is purported to be a very strong transmission capable of dealing with tons of power. The 1981 931 got the audi box that was also carried over to the 944.

Yes, only the 1 year for the Snail Shell which had 915 transaxle internals so more robust and versatile gear sets are available.

"This picture is of a 5 speed snailshell and torsion bar carrier from a 1980 931. Note how the transmission sits on top of the arms. 1980 was the last year this transmission was used for US spec cars, and it was only used in the 931 in 1980. This setup is preferred by some who are interested in a track car. The transmission is easier to remove and replace. It is lighter. There are more gearsets available and it is easier to change gearsets than the Audi based unit. Here's a few more pictures of the different torsion bar carriers for the different mountings" -- Courtesy of http://www.924.org/techsection/7transaxle.htm

A good friend of mine has one from a 80' 924 Turbo and is currently not being used for anything.

I was sure the '79 924 had the snailshell when they switched from 4spd to 5spd before going to the audi box like the turbo?

this was the snailshell in my old RoW '80 924 turbo

Yes I believe you are correct in that the 924 normally aspirated model did have the snail shell in 1979, I was referring to the 924 turbo which had it just for 1980.

So
If it was so great why didn't they keep using it? Is it too expensive to make?

You'd think they'd at least put it on the turbos or something.

i'd speculate that it was cost. they were a porsche-getrag box. which turbos? 944 turbos? they were in all the CGT race cars which had up to 375hp. by the time of the 951 they hadn't been used in the 924/944 series for 5 yrs. its a good box for racing- compact, light, strong and a dog-leg first.

quoting Ideola from 924board
To summarize:
088/6 and 088/A = 4-speed Audi (standard 76-79 US & ROW)
016/Z & 016/Y = 5-speed snailshell for NAs (optional 78-79 US & ROW)
016/8 & 016/9 = 5-speed Audi for NAs (standard, 80-onward US & ROW)
G31/01 & G31/02 = 5-speed snailshell for 931s (standard 79-80 US, 79-84 ROW)
016/G = 5-speed Audi for 931s, 924S, and early 944 (standard 81-onward US only)
Gearing is definitely different between same versions of any gearbox between NA & 931. Gearing is also different across the various gearboxes. And finally, gearing is different between US & ROW versions of the same gearbox. Jon's spreadsheet illustrates this clearly, and Pete's writeup also covers the topic in depth.
