interesting to learn some of you are north of 'water-cooled' 996 money.
Texas,
must feel quite satisfying to keep a car running for the better part of 3 decades.
Porsche restorations and upkeep aren't 'e-type' stupid. but the pain is considerable.
Chop,
you're such a hack. no e-type LSx swaps (250 + pound weight savings) on your resume.

Here you go guys.
Here are the service and repair intervals on my 951 since new. Many of the services like just oil changes also have some type of repair with them too. Especially for cooling and hoses and coolant issues. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
9/27/85 Serviced for delivery $36,003.60 and Ready to Roll

71,750 Good stretch - 1999 30K Service
80, 186
85,572 Another big chunk - 2004
88,000 2005. Small issues a lot.
Cost through 2005 - $17,000 for 20 years and 88,000 miles not counting warranted repair costs.
Car sits a lot now.
91,000 Go completley through car - April 2010 - August 2010 - $14,000
91,300 More work January 2011 $4,000
So it looks like every 5 years or so it wants to get in your pocket. Now that I have it mostly done maybe it will cooperate for the next 4 years.
Then I will sell it !!!!!!! Before it starts doing its German roll you in a mud hole and stomp you down thing.!
Just kidding of course. You got to get your moneys worth.

I have a rather thick file folder of receipts that i'm sure adds up to a newish 996, but i'm in denial and refuse to add it all up.

[QUOTE=TexasRider;8730622]Here you go guys.
Hmmmm... guess I'll stick with my n/a and go Wilks for a slight bump from my 158hp plus whatever Bursch headers add..
Seems the '88 m.y. had a nice mix of factory inprovements and component simplicity vs. 951?
For those of us seeking smiles per Porsche-dollars, I say thanks for the blown motor cost delta!!
Great thread!
Nice to have cost comparisons...

$14.5K for a very nice bone-stock low miles 94 968 three years ago
~$700 for new rubber two years ago
~$300 for fuel pump replacement and some minor work two years ago.
$225 for a couple of oil changes
$600 for a major tune + oil change six months ago
$250 for new rear wiper motor one month ago
One unexplained electrical fire which resulted in insurance company totaling the car one month ago.
Don't get me started on my wife's '91 944 S2 Cab
I'm now looking for a replacement - choices being considered include 2000/01/02 Boxster S, replacement 968, or (where I'm really leaning) 996

Bought mine for $6250 with about $5k in receipts from the P.O. for
-tbelt, water pump, front engine seals, oil cooler, tires, alignments, etc all done at once
since buying it I've done
-new clutch @ $3k
-new master cyl (mechanic threw it in for free!)
-2 halfshafts $200 total
-short shifter $500 installed
- misc parts (bulbs, trim pieces, filters, shift levers, rebuilding boost controller) $600
leaving it at $15k and that's not counting all the go fast goodies the PPO installed. I don't even want to think about how much that cost him, but judging by the work it was no expense spared.
I still need paint, new seats+dash, and all kinds of miscellaneous interior bits. Also it's about time for new rod bearings and a tbelt (here comes the while-you're-in-thereitis)

the XKE is...for all its quirks and issues...automotive perfection, or as close as it gets. now, if someone were to remake the jag V12, and bump it up in power output...ill look the other way while i reach for my checkbook...
that, or an aluminum casting of the 4.2 jaguar six, brought up to 100hp/L...THAT would be sweet

$4,000 for 1984 944, $35 oil change, some misc. stuff like new seat covers, washing and waxing supplies about $50. Alot was already done before i bought it like new goodyear eagle gt. Probably replace timing belt this Dec. Not actually due til next June and service the rear gearbox it kind of leaks a bit.

But if you guys had just bought a 996, your receipts for that car would probably equal a 997. And if you bought a 997, your receipts would equal a.......
Doesn't matter what used car you buy, you will put money into it to keep it on the road.......and then the modifications on top of that.......

Unfortunately.
If it says Porsche on it, its going to be expensive. One way or another.

I think I'm still well under used 996 prices and I can spank a stock 996 all over the track. Granted it comes at the cost of reliability and comfort. Don't forget to add time into the equation. In 2003 when I bought the 951, there was no way I could afford a 996. I don't know how to put a value on driving a great car for 8 years, but it's certainly been better than biding my time for a used 996.
