Default instrument cluster removal

i was wanting to know how to remove the instrument cluster in an early 85 with the three gauge pods. i removed the two top screws but the thing still felt pretty snug and i didn't want to experiment and break anything. i want to do this the right way and would appreciate any help!

Clark's Garage is your friend.

http://www.clarks-garage.com/

Go to "Garage Shop Manual" --> Gauges

you need to remove the steering wheel, the turn signal switch, the wiper switch and the trim pieces before the gauges can pull out. once the two screws are out then pull, it will come out, you will have to reach your hand back there to unscrew the speedometer cable which may be difficult. i had to fight some pliers into there the first time to break it loose. be careful with removing the wires as well especially the connectors to the tach.

If all you are removing is the gauges the only thing you need to take off first is the steering wheel... and you don't really HAVE to do that but it takes a second amd makes it much easier to pull the gauges

I've had the instruments out of my 87 with the wheel in. My early 85 the wheel had to come out. The instrument cluster and trim is very different b/t early and late style interiors.

the car is an early build 85. the reason i'm pulling the gauges is to check the bulbs. i have no instrument cluster lights. i plan on checking the dimmer before the bulbs but wanted a heads up on the work and time involved on pulling the gauges before i started.
