Default On my way home with my new 89 and BANG!!!

Broke the m&*%@$f&*%!#$ cv shaft at the tranny.

Driving along thinking about how I was going to post what a great car it was, it's still probably better than my 85, and decided I needed to exit for a bathroom break. Went to get on the on ramp and a loud noise from the rear and pulled over on the ramp. My dad pulls up next to me and doesn't see anthing wrong but no power. I check to see if it's a dreaded CV shaft failure. We push it into a parking lot so I can go get it on the trailer tomorrow since towing it the 50 miles to the house was going to be $200 and since I was waiting until tomorrow to call GEICO towing wasn't covered as a pre exisiting condition.

Anyways, the tranny end of the CV is sitting on top of the exhaust. What are the chances that I need to replace the CV and what are the chances I just need to remove what's left of the bolts in the tranny and replace them?

What's the best bolt to replace the factory CV bolts with? I'll go ahead and get enough to replace all of them on both sides. I was reading something about allen headed bolts for a 911 but I was on my phone and am unsure where I read that.

I know that's going to be a PITA if there's not enough to grab with vise grips. I go to dallas middle of the week to bring my 86 parts car back so I will have a couple of spair CVs if that needs replacing.

Came across this thread for a set of bolts.. not sure if they've made another round but you might try sending a PM.

Good luck, ****ty way to start. But you're obviously pretty fluent in fixing these cars. When I got my turbo last year the starter seized the second day I had it, they must like to show you who's boss early in the relationship :P

One of my 24 new bolts from Paragon broke at < 30 ft-lbs when I was installing it. I was able to back it out, though -- literally hanging on by a thread -- and the rest were fine.

Good luck.

yeah. I went all the way up to look at it on saturday and the alternator went out and was kicking the ABS light on too. Owner replaced the alternator and I went up today and got it. Just wish it hadn't been pooring rain at night when it happened.

and I got home and my roommate showed me that the roof started leaking in the back of the kitchen. Really? Grrrr

Any specific reason? Bolts are bolts, as long as they are the same hardness spec. I imagine that the hardness rating for the CV bolts is 12.9, but it could be 10.9.

We use this type of lock washers where I work, and they are absolutely awesome... anyone fee like being a guinea pig and seeing how they work on the half shafts?

CheeseHeads don't strip as easily as Allens do.

Also, welcome to Porsche ownership this is jus the beginning..

Same thing happened to my car about a year ago. Shifting in to 2nd and POP!! My bolts had actually just backed out...and the 2 that were left decided they couldn't handle the torque.

Hopefully it's a quick fix for you.....that's really frustrating!

I'm hoping that there's enough of a stub left sticking out I can grab it with some vise-grips and back em out. I think I'll call Porsche this morning and see if they have any replacement ones in stock and then order the stage 8 ones.

And how's the best way to pull this on to the trailer and tie it down?

Called Porsche and they'll have to order the bolts and it'll take 5 days. Looks like it's just the stage 8 ones for me then.

Is it a Turbo or N/A? You might be able be able to get a rebuilt axle shaft or a aftermarket one from 944 Online. Check it out they are cheaper than Porsche OE axles.

It's an N/A. I'll look but I'm hoping the shaft it's self is fine and it just broke those 6 bolts.

The bolts are grade 12.9. Don't try to use grade 10.9 (or even worse grade 8.8) in their place as they won't be able to take the torque (30 ft. lbs. for an M8 bolt is a lot of torque). Try to keep the threads free of grease as it will greatly affect the results when torquing the bolts. I've had the unpleasant experience of stripping one of the threads on the stub axle at the transmission. I ended up using a Helicoil to repair the thread.

One more thing, don't bother with those cheap Lisle triple square bits. I twisted one on a stubborn CV bolt. I was shocked it didn't strip any bolt heads prior to that. I now use a set from SK which are longer for better access and are locked into a socket. The set isn't cheap but they should last a lifetime: http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/p-51...ool-19704.aspx

As a bonus, you get the tools for all the door and hatch hardware (6mm bit) and cam shaft gear and flywheel (10mm). I don't think I've ever used the 12mm. Or do the flywheel bolts use the 12mm? Can't remember

Snap-On makes the same thing but at an even higher price.
