Default My 87 951 project.

OK friends, so here is the deal. the 951 is my dream car, last week i bought myself one. now its time to start the project, my goals are from 400-450 horsepower. i want to do it in the best and most efficient way. i want to start with the engine rebuild, replace nearly everything that can be upgraded to something that is longer lasting, and better for performance. so what im asking all in all is... what modifications available are worth it, and where should i get what. im not going to say that i have a price point because i know that budgets get blown out very quickly so i just forgot about it all in all.

Congrats on your car and welcome. I'm not a turbo man but there's plenty to do for it. Think you start browsing some of the sponsors sites like lindseyracing.com and you'll find a lot.

have fun

yea i was considering doing the ls1 swap back with my 86 NA, but now i want to stick to the four and see what i can get out of it. anyone know what i should use for rebuilding supplies?

im aiming for around 450hp
pistons?
connecting arms?
bearings, should i go stock or aftermarket?
is there a timing belt kit upgrade i can do?
should i go with a chip or do a full tuned computer?
where do i get new headbolts and rod bolts from?
what good about widefire headgaskets? and cometic?
Fuel injectors?
who makes good valve springs?
where do i get some awesome strong valves?
would it be possible to put a 16 valve head on the 8v crankcase?

thanks for all the answers guys i appreciate it.

look around on the turbo boards and you should find plenty of ideas. Definitly will need rods, sfr2 header, big turbo, dp, wg, exhaust, flowed head, etc.... although i have seen 604rwhp from a 2.5, you would prob need to build a 2.7 or 3.0l.

Get in Touch with Chris White, he HAS the answers to all these questions, and the answers to all the questions you AREN'T yet asking...

FWIW, Your stock fuel system will not support this power level, nor will the rest of your drivetrain, additionally your brakes and suspension will be punnished, so you will need to considder alternatives there.

Duke can give you some guidance as he is in this power level on a daily driven car.

glad to hear you are sticking with the 2.5L engine... a V8 just seems so sacreligious.. and to upset the balance of the car for speed just doesnt seem right. fun, yes but overall not so great imo.

450 for the street? Man, I run about 320-340 with my car - reasonable mods - and it's MORE than plenty. I can't imagine 100 more HP that you honestly can't even use...the turbo's strength are not on the low end anyway, and the cost to get that last 100HP is, well...it ain't cheap.

Swap the motor out.... seriously, torque comes from displacement and compression.

If/when my motor needs to be retired. I will be building a 9-9.5:1 motor and run lower boost. Low compression/high boost is 80's tech for road cars.... it's fine for race cars since they spend most of their time higher up in the RPM range.

Absolutely true too. This may have been an original Porsche quote.
