Default Problem...BIG problem !

Almost two years ago I had my belts, hoses, and waterpump replaced. I heard what I supposed to be balance belt whine but drove it the rest of that summer (1000-1200 miles) hoping it would mellow out. Last summer I could also hear "siren" sounds and boost became weak. I was thinking vacuum leaks but I had to close my business (16 years) due to the economy and increased competition and I could not afford repairs so I stopped driving it. I finally took it to my mechanic this week hoping it might be only a couple of vacuum leaks they could find quickly with their smoke machine. WRONG ! The vacuum hoses looked bad but the nut holding the fins in the turbo had come off and trashed the turbo(sorry no pics). I remember reading several years ago that this happened to someone else on this forum and thinking..."that poor xxxxxxx". Well, it's my turn now. Logic tells me that IF I can find an affordable turbo now is the time to replace the vacuum lines as well...translation : sounds like a fortune of parts and labor (he allows me to buy my own parts and charges a flat $40/hour). I am bummed...it feels like I need to spend what the car is worth right now to fix it. I guess I am venting and looking for direction.

Life is long. Maybe keep in it good condition until there is money to fix it?

I hope the nut came off on the exhaust side. I though it sounded more like a cat had got in my engine and was growling when I lost and exhaust turbine blade. I might be able to help you out, drop me a PM.

you will likely need to replace the intercooler along with the turbo (shrapnel all in there). luckily people sell those for well under $100 and the turbo could be good used for $150 or less.

thanks folks...once again Rennlist rules ! Is there any hope for the intercooler..flushed ..with new hoses ?? I know it's not super expensive but I'm trying to save and improve at the same time and I know every gasket and hose etc. adds up.

I would think that if you brought it to an engine shop, that will get all the oil/metal out of it and clean it up to boot.

Now, somehow my intercooler went through the dishwasher and came out clean as a whistle. Had to run a couple of empty cycles with lots of detergent to remove all the evidence.

Thats the spirit. Just be patient, take your time, save the pennies, and you'll be back on the road before you know it.
