Default Question on hoisting a motor

Going to either rent or buy a hoist. The rental place said I need my own chain. I am assuming I can run into home depot and buy a length of change and 2 "S" hooks that can handle about 400 to 500 lbs and hook in the chain to the lift in the middle of the chain and attached the "S" hooks to the ends of the chain and attach them to the 2 lifting points. OK? Never hoisted a motor before.

Yup, Home depot will have the correct size for you.

Are you Hoisting or Supporting? Like are you removing the engine or simply supporting it for Motor Mount Replacement/Oil Pan Gasket/Rod Bearings?

using this weekend to lift a motor off a pallet into a van.
Then will be used to drop a motor out the bottom and then lift one up from underneath.

Ahhh, ok. Well as i said, Home Depot will have the Chain and Hooks you'll need. 500lbs is not very much for a decent chain...

Look at the Hoist points on the engine to get an idea of what hooks to get.

If your project is on jack stands, you might be surprised by the height of a 951 engine trying to take it out the bottom. Even on big 6 ton truck stands, I'm pulling it out the top now...

Just FYI, I got (bought) a great hydraulic cherrypicker from Pepboys for like $189 or thereabouts. Don't know what it costs to rent one, but if you have the room to keep it, it seemed like false economy to rent it instead. I've used it several times around the garage too, to move stuff around and save my back.

Either way, what you really want is a "leveler" bar so you can adjust where the center of gravity pulls on the motor. Pepboys has those too for cheap -- it comes with chains and hooks too.

he's talking about those.
and they work great.
it probably would have been a bitch doing the engine without it.

+1 makes it easy enough that you can lift a driveline out by yourself (I do not recommend doing it by yourself)

If you have Aprils issue of car and driver, there is a coupon for a engine hoist for 99$ at harbour freight tools.

if you do buy one make sure you at least look at a picture of a finished one. as most will require assembly.

Don't do what this knucklehead did and leave off a couple pretty important pieces.

In a pinch I have used tie-down straps in place of chain (could not find my chain and needed to move some motors.) I suggest you double them and use more than one (or use chain :-)

The advantage of renting is that in general they don't rent junk. They also provide chains, hooks, and levelers on request. The hydraulics won't leak, much stronger construction, wide spread on the legs, etc. I bought a "upscale" foldable from HF about 10 yrs ago, had it start to fold on me with a 450 lb engine on the hook, with the engine high in the air to clear the radiator support. The hydraulics have leaked since Day 1, not fast but enough that you can't leave anything on the hook for more than 1/2 hour.
