What should I offer for this "core" engine?
Just as a quick sanity check, what is a complete 944 engine worth (unknown year, unknown condition)? I offered $50 and thought that was generous. Since I can't go much higher than that, I thought maybe someby here could use something? The seller is an ex-jarhead...;]
What say you RL meisters?...Bruce

PS... I only want to use it as a test jig - not for rebuilding or any kind of repair.

I agree ^ and be careful of the "ex-jarhead" remark or "we" may have to smack you in the back of the head Gibbs/NCIS style.

I would be insulted at $50 no doubt. As for value... being a racer I put higher value than most on rebuildable engines. Alot depend on what is mean by rebuildable. If all it needs is to be torn down, cleaned and rebuilt with fresh seals, gaskets, and bearings I would easy spring $500 if I needed spare motor. Given rebuilt costs I would be in for $1500 rebuilt and I would be happy. If the block were damaged then $150 to 200 would cover the head.
However that craiglist ad not very specific so I would want to see them first hand.

If it was a long block only with a hole on the side, then yes offer 50$. I recently sold a long block with accessories with no intake or wires for 200$ (IIRC). The catch was he had to load it himself. Lol.

I don't see any reason $50 is insulting for a first offer on a trully unknown condition engine(s)..
There is nothing I see in the add to indicate anything of real use as is (I recently had my head refinished.. $800)..
And if the seller is insulted by your offer, then I would venture a guess that the seller has either un-realistic concept of value for the engine, or is flaky.. did he counter your offer?
Also, as for the pricing.. when complete cars can be had for $500.. I think $500 for just a motor is a little outrageous especially when the seller is clearly indicating in the listing they need rebuild!
As far as determining year, ask for a picture of the top of the block, at the rear of the head (where the engine casting numbers are stamped into the top of the block) this should tell you more about these engines...

I sold a complete early engine for $400.00 last year.

I'm local and need a lower balance shaft so I contacted him hoping to catch it just before he sent them to the scrap yard. His first number to me was $350 for my choice of one of the engines. I don't need a whole engine so I declined.
Hey, if you buy one and don't need the lower balance shaft, PLEASE MESSAGE ME.
thanks.

I don't. Remember that a complete car comes with well a complete car and so one must both transport that car and have place to store it. An engine is much easier transport/storage deal. I once bought an entire car for $330 dollars. The wheels alone I was able to sell for $250. So did that make the engine which needed a rebuild worth $80. Heck no.

Yeah $50 is super low. Aluminum is worth a good amount as scrap and that whole engine could be worth a couple hundred at the scrap yard. Go take a look at the engines first since there's almost no information in the ad, then make him an offer.
