I tend to agree. I've bought two "parked" $1200 944's (including the Steingrau '86 I now have) and my recommendation would be to do the minimal amount to get it safely on the road, before you sink big money into it. Not that that will be cheap (TB/BB and rollers minimum) but I'd be suspicious the mice have chewed up the wiring and made a real nightmare for you.

ditto. get it clean, get it running, use it for a few months and decide what you want to do with the car. collect parts while using it, then put it back on the blocks, remove, replace, rinse, repeat.

STrek that, I would start off stripping it down.. all the way down... and rebuilding it from the ground up.. take time, do it right, and you will have a $5-8K investment in a great car!

Wow guys! Thanks again for the great advice!
I'll have to ask my buddy's wife why the car was parked.....I do know my buddy got it runnin about 5 yrs ago...took it around the block, scared the **** outa him....and he parked it again 'cause he could see the RMS leaking pretty harshly.Sooooooo with that inof in hand.....I figurd to drop the engine and reseal it....thereby eliminating a leak issue, all rubber under hood.....repair the observed chewed on wiring....obviously, new TB/BB and such.....the transaxle is actually in really good shape....not drop anywhere...so far.....but, again...just a few extra bolts to drop that out and reseal it too....at that point drivetrain-wise she should be good to go.After all that I feel I could "trust" here to get me around a bit without any major hickups.
BTW, the door retainer doohickey, the device that keeps the door from wrapping forward, that is broken....already pulled door panel off and retrieved it....anybody know the "official" name for it....maybe even a link to where I could get one...new/used/outta someones parts car???? the body is in great shape, I don't want the door "getting away" from me and crunching the fender!!!

Agaian, thank you for ALL the insight guys, it makes me feel A LOT more confident about tinkering/fixing her up and all!

It is not that difficult to do on a budget... that other thread is insane.. he purchased a NEW hatch, from the factory.. for more than MOST 944NAs are worth!

I still stand by my assessment, this car is worth saving, if for no other reason than to enjoy... BUT to be able to enjoy it, several things should be done, as is prudent with any 23 year old car... seals, suspension, clutch, engine reseal, wheel bearings, brakes, steering.. I would even voulantear to the OP, my NEW suspension pieces (replaced 15K miles ago) will be coming up for sale soon (within the next month, but perhaps this weekend) as they are being replaced with the Konis off my 951...

These are the things that will not only make the car a joy to drive, but safe while doing it!

little plastic bits on the interior can be done at any point, but doing the basic minimums to make it run will only end in it having to be taken apart several times... and doing these basics isnt difficult, nor does it have to be expensive, it takes patience, a bit of money, and effort... doing it over and over and over is where it gets expensive... or trying to restore it to factory spec...

I still stand by my recommendation to tear it all apart, recondition what doesn't NEED to be replaced, replace what you cant recondition, put it back together, and enjoy it as it was intended to be enjoyed..

OH, did I mention, I will be breaking 100K on the car in my avater today? 99976 pulling into the parking lot at work today.... 700 miles in the last week after putting my head back on last saturday!

I may have one laying around, if I can put my grubby paws on it I will send it to you gratis... considder it an investment in your cars future!

You may also be able to get one or both off someone on here who is partign out a car, but the age of those would be questionable at best!
