My grandpa is selling his 1986 944 Turbo... After talking to him he said he would really like to see the car go to me. We are trying to discuss a market value of the car... This is where you guys come in, what do you feel the car is worth in todays market?

Here are the cars specs:

1986 Porsche 944 Turbo
MINT Black Leather Interior
MINT Guards Red Factory Paint
Spotless Engine Bay
All Routine Maintenance Completed (Timing Belt, Rollers, Water Pump, Clutch, Etc.)

I installed a 3" Cat-Back Exhaust and a Lindsey Racing Boost Enhancer.

HERE IS THE KICKER BOYS!!! 34,000 miles

What is a fair price?

Thanks Guys.

when (miles/years) was the "routine maintenance" performed?

Throw up some pictures.. to be fair, I know of a 24K miles example 1986 944T, concours queen that sold for nearly 20K on the open market.

Does it have Fuchs or Phone dials? Red/Black was a pretty popular color combo too.. M030? LSD?

He doesn't want to charge me retail, I just don't want to take advantage of him. I want to give him a fair amount, and a safe price where I could get my money back if I needed to.

Timing belt every 2 years, water pump, oil pump and clutch last year. There is a huge folder full of maintenance records since he bought the car new. He drives at least 1,000 miles per summer.

It has the Phone Dials, Red Exterior, Black Interior, It has the adjustable Koni Suspension, and I have not looked at the option sticker yet.

I'd say between $7500-$10K. 34,000 miles sounds nice, but it may be a curse. 134,000 miles may be better if the car isn't driven a little bit regularly. If not, you have to figure that every piece of rubber has to be replaced. Every coolant hose, brake seal (master cylinder) clutch system part, CV joint boot, suspension parts. You've got $1K in brake parts, $500 in cooling, $100 in CV joint boots, $1000+ in suspension. Plus labor to put them on.

Sometimes recieving the family heirloom can be a curse. I love my Bronco, but it is 250 miles away in a barn because I can't do much with it. My great uncle bought it new and willed it to me. I'd let it go if not for how much I revered him (he was like my grandfather, as his brother died before my folks married, and Mom's father died when I was very young). I'm trying to say that you should be sure you really want it, and if you think it would be too much, consider talking to him about helping him move it.

My Turbo S was a barn find. 64,000 miles. Yes, that is more, but it spent its first two years in Toledo. If your grandfather's car was driven outside of the Summers, and he lives in Michigan, you can count on every bolt under the car being rusted, and if like my Turbo S, you'll break half of the ones on the exhaust system, rather than loosen them.

Obviously there are positive aspects. I'm playing devil's advocate, as you sound pretty geeked about it, and there are always two sides to a coin.

I really appreciate your insight and I do want the car, I have done all of the recent maintanence for him, all the bushings and hoses look fine, the Koni's are still stiff.

About the winter comment, that man was so **** with that car the only time it saw water was when it was washed. HAHA!!!

$6500, thats the going rate for an average 86 Turbo with current belts / rollers / water pump, right now.
I saw a nice one go for $4k a few weeks ago, but with no records. One in excellent condition, low miles and goodies "could" go for $10-11K but the seller would have to be willing to wait on it for quite some time.

I wouldn't nickel and dime your own grandpa... Give him $12k

The expensive stuff would be paint and interior, and you say they are cherry. Belts and stuff are cheap compared to a paint job. But how is the clutch?? Still rubber?

+1

Tell him you wanna give him what it's worth. Like 10-12k if possible. "Mint" is a very strong word, and you used it twice. Not to mention "spotless".

I have always thought that the PO has more impact on a cars value than a lot of other factors, and you have found the perfect PO(ie extremely ****). No idea on value, just don't mod it, as it's the unmodified versions that will hold value in the longer term. BTW I am envious, as thats the type of car I would have loved to have found.

peace

Give him what you can in cash. Also, depends on whether he really needs the money too. Eventually, my dad will give me his 89 930, and no money will change hands...

Lucky dog.

This is an interesting thread. Is it not hypothetical? Pictures will blow the cork off this one.

I bought my 1986 944 Turbo for $11,500. I bought it with 29,000 miles clocked and all the records down to the oil changes. Its black on black, interior being in mint condition. I'd say 34,000 mi. these days around $10,000
