Family discount $6500, let him drive it when he wants. Conditions, if he drives the car, he will need to wash and wax the car. If the car breaks down, don't blame HIM.

I hope that you take care of the car like your Grandpa did. It would probably be a sore spot with him if you don't.
$10-$12 is what the car sounds like it is worth to me..

Just for clarification… did the ’86 Turbo have an M030 option and did any Turbo 944 have a rubber center clutch?
Don’t take this the wrong way, but my Grandpa gave me his prized vehicle I was simply the only one he trusted with its care and there is no way I could afford to pay what it is worth. Being that your Grandpa is selling his 951 he wants money and to be fair some where north of $10K would be fair for you both.

If you both like to gamble I would flip a coin, $11,000 would get him a good price and $8500 would get you a great deal. Let the coin decide, either that or just split the middle at $9750. It sounds like a great car.

I agree with 67King. I think fair value for the car is probably around 10k, but I also think the only way you aren't going to lose money on the car is if you park it and don't drive it (or drive it very sparingly). Once you start driving a 25 year old garage queen, things start failing at a rapid pace, from a maintenance standpoint they are nightmares. If you want to buy the car to keep it in the family, and don't mind putting potentially a lot of money into it,then I say go for it! If you are buying it as an investment, then let it go. I maintain a few 30-40k mile 951's, and there has been more than a few large bills given to the owners. Once you go in to do a job, you find yourself replacing everything you touch due to age. IMHO, age is just as bad, if not worse than mileage.

I agree fully with porschedoc. It sounds like a 10-12k car that may need some work due to age. If you really want a show queen, and like doing your own work, I would offer 10k.
If you want a driver, buy a 6-7k weekend racer.

There's an immaculate 951 I went to see today, 1986, absolutely spotless and in impeccable condition. A file over 2" thick of service records with 115,000 miles on. If I had the $7950 they wanted, I'd have driven away today.

i would present him with a high and a low number of actual value and perhaps you guys can meet in the middle somewhere. it sounds like a vehicle that i would not hesitate to buy. i still have the 63 Ford Falcon that my grandfather gave me and it has more sentimental value than anything. i feel that your grandfather won't overcharge you and will come up with a fair price based on what you present him.
