My tensioner broke 3 months ago and i'm still in the process of repairing. i bought two 62k mile camshafts for $700 both and have the head repaired. now it just needs to go back on the car. this was at 119,000 miles. no records on ownerships before i bought the car, unfortunately.

I bought my 1987 944S last year with 32K miles. I did the water pump/timing belt service right away and have not had a problem (as with the rest of you, KNOCK ON WOOD).
Question #1: What is this I hear about having the belts re-tightened after a certain time period???
Question #2: Have you all heard about the 944S and 944S2 Register sponsored by PCA? I am going to send my info in today and see what happens.
Thanks.

You're supposed to retension the new belts after 1500-2000 miles. Could be looking for trouble if you don't. You'll start to hear the belts "slapping" when the engine is cold.
Usually shops offer a free retension on new belts.

i got my S a few months ago, and according to the records from the PO, the timing belt and chains and whatnot were replaced/tensioned about 25K miles ago. so, obviously, i haven't had to do anything to 'em yet. no problems with that area at all . . . . .
now if i could just find the short in my sunroof wiring . . . .

I'm getting a little psycho with maintenance on this car... I get the belts checked every year (I drive it about 10k miles/year). Cheap compared to bent valves! It got me once and that's enough.
