Post calling all 16 ventilers!!!

I'm browsing rennlist on a daily basis and I see a bunch of "S" owners with head/tensionner problems. How many of you have not suffered any 3k engine problems yet?

Who are the ones that did?

bader$, sharky47, 944S Boyeee, myself, and who else?

Mine wasn't a head or tensioner problem - it was a dumb owner (me) not being educated enough to know what loose belts sound like.

Won't happen again.

Cool

Here's my story...

Bought car with orig bill of sale & all receipts.
Engine rebuilt about two years prior to my purchase.

Replaced chain tensioner and all pulleys and belts just for the peace of mind. Reputable Shop did the pulleys and belts. Got good care.

Car blew its' top in Coldiron Kentucky. Carried it back to John and crew at Black Forest in Delray
(John was going to going to eat the whole bill so I'd have no expenses had it been his fault). Good for him and bad for me as it turned out.

The previous shop had put in a heli coil after stripping out a hole, had stressed the hole they had drilled out, and oxidation had further destroyed the area around the repair. Bolt had essentially cracked the casting. Bolt fell out, jammed belt, and well... you know!

John was relieved because it wasn't his fault, and I (in a sense) was releived because I could still trust his work!!! He did sterling service and really held the cost down for me!

So... Just because you have all receipts and keep on top of maintenance, doesn't mean that you will avoid the dreaded breakdown.

Loose belts... I know the sound now. After my rebuild (see photos in profile) I only retentionned the new t-belt after 5700 miles... could have been expensive all over again.

I replaced the tensioner and chain on general principles. My expensive engine trauma was at the other end of the engine, although part of the reason for replacing tensioner/chain was due to noise on the lower end of the motor sounding like it was from the top (until the loud banging noise that left no doubt).

Heh, let's see...

Before I bought it the tensioner went at about 100K miles. Repaired properly, no problems....
Engine rebuilt at 130K because the previous owners felt that 10K oil changes were OK... main bearings at the wear limit, center thrust bearing gone, center crank damage. Rod bearings were fine though.
About 10K after the rebuild the exhaust cam snapped. strange failure, no one ever heard of it. I replaced the cam and all related head parts.

Runs perfectly now (knock on wood).

No problems at all except I think the mech who did the belts last indexed balance shaft wrong. A little more vibration than there should be. Belts were done 14k and 5 years ago - going to change them and water pump this summer.

No problems yet...that's 'cause I haven't even diven mine yet. Just got it last night and now I'm trying to diagnose a bad knocking / rattling sound.

But the car was real nice so even if I have to do a complete rebuild, I should break even on what the car is worth...and have a "new" engine to boot.

I replaced by chain and pad (though not the tensioner itself) on my S2.

Details (if you're interested) at: http://www.weissach.net/WP0AB294XMN410197-History.html

Got mine 9/15/01, 148K then 180K now, at my mech.'s suggestion I replaced the pad
(that had very little wear on it,but was oil stained) but nothing else.

Only head problem was breaking one of those stupid *** valve cover bolts that was a complete b$tch to get out.

Mouse cty had head damage also but his like most of the others that I've read about were from timing belts or rollers breaking.

Less than 2 tanks of gas after a belt change I had a roller sieze and the crank pulley spin off but thank God no damage.
