Post Shave Cylinder heads

Alright. I'm wanting to do this to my 924S. sounds fun. what I want to know is, since this is one of those zero tollerance, interference engines, do I have to have the valves re-seated, shortened, etc.? I know I don't want the experience with bent valves, so what's needed? Thanks much. <img border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" title="" src="graemlins/drink.gif" />

Bent valves is caused by timing-belt problems. The valve-lift is determined by the cam-lobe, so that will remain constant regardless of how much you shave off the head. I've taken off 0.060" without any problems. But I'm not sure how much you can get out of a 924S with head-shaving though.

You can take .060 off the 944 na 8V head.

But why? I does not give much more than 5 hp at best and you may need higher octain gas.

Some of us spec guys have done it, but that is to try to find 2-3 hp. I would not bother on a street car other than to ensure the head is flat after headgasket work.

My head was shaved down slightly (not sure how much though) when I had the headgasket replaced to ensure everything was nice and flat. Can't say that I notice any more power or anything.

surfacing the head shouldn't require removing more than 3 to 4 thousandths. that's like raising compression a 20th of a point I think. shouldn't see any difference.

I drove a 944 today with a shaved head, and scared the HELL out of the 17 year old passenger, heheheheh! Aww, I never even had time to take it out of 2nd before I had to hit the brakes and park it.

But I LOOOVED the look on his face! He just bought his first car, a 944 N/A, and I've already had to teach him why his battery died...middle is not OFF on the lights! When he told me it had a buzzing noise going on in the background, I told him I thought he left the running lights on; lo and behold, it was.

He ain't gonna make that mistake again!

But the look on his face, when I floored the shaved head car was priceless! Jaw hanging, fear in eyes...ah, I may have messed him up for dating for the rest of his life, lol! He'll want a chick that works on cars!

another possible prob with milling heads with an overhead cam is that if you go too far the cam timing changes somewhat while it not cause major problems it canbe detrimental. The only cure is an indexable cam sprocket. I've had this problem on some import motors that have had to be milled to get them flatespecially the mitsy eclipse motors.

Well, the fact that car is gutted and has been angle milled to way below min thickness as an experiment with a straight 3 inch exhaust makes it just a little bit faster than the normal mild shaved head 944.....

well, I have a 3 inch exhaust...does that make a difference in whether or not the shaved head will help?

You don't really want to go that far unless you have spare cylinder heads like I do. The next time it needs machining, you throw that head away.

After researching for a long while few years ago, I found the cheapest way to make a 944 fast is to sell it and get a chipped 951.
