944 Cup 2011 Schedule
If you live in a cold-weather climate, or even if you don’t, the 944 Cup’s 2011 schedule is certainly going to get your Porsche racing enthusiasm revving in high gear. This series, which was formed in 2002 to provide a national series for drivers of front-engine Porsches, offers 22 Regional races and a National Championship for 2011.
The preliminary schedule is predominantly comprised of nine races under the umbrella of PCA. The 944 Cup will also hold one race with EMRA, three with NASA, five with SCCA and two with Canadian organizations. The 944 Cup will hold Nationals at New Jersey Motorsports Park, October 28-30.
The Canada chapter will offer three races, while co-hosting a fourth at Watkins Glen, alongside 944 Cup’s North chapter and Zone 1 of PCA. The Canada and North chapters join the South and Northwest chapters in representing the 944-based series from east to west.
The 944 Cup retains one category for normally aspirated 944 and 924S models (SP2 in PCA), plus the 944 Super Cup (SP3) for the Turbos, S2s and 968s. Updated rules for the series as approved by PCA will be released in January.
For more information, see http://www.pca.org/Activities/ClubRacing/Schedule.aspx. See www.44cup.com for the full schedule.
The tentative joint 944 Cup/PCA races are:
• February 3-6, Sebring International Raceway, Florida
• April 8-10, Road Atlanta, Georgia
• May 27-29, Watkins Glen International, New York
• June 17-19 Portland International Raceway, Oregon
• July 29-30, Mosport International Raceway, Ontario, Canada
• August 26-28, NJMP/Thunderbolt Circuit
• September 30-October 2, Summit Point Motorsports Park, West Virginia
• October 7-9, Daytona International Speedway, Florida
• December 2-4, Roebling Road, Georgia

How active is the 944 Super Cup Series? I have an '87 S that I was considering building to run in the Super Cup series, but I can't find any events for it. If you go to the NASA website and try to register for most of the events Super Cup is not listed as one of the options.

We've had good turn outs for the Super Cup at the first two races of the year. The class is showing signs of having a good year. But, the bad news is that the 944S model was dropped from the class this year .

The S model was too fast for the Cup class and difficult for it too keep up with the 16 valves and turbos. Evidenced by the fact that so few S cars have raced in the series over the years.

My mistake and apologies. The 944S is still able to particpate in the series. When we consolidated the rules this year we did some streamlining which at one time had dropped the 924 (2L) and the 944S. We got some feedback that convinced us that Super Cup would do better with more races with PCA, and we decided to motor on with SC and also to leave in the S model. I totally forgot about that late reversal. Thanks for bringing to my attention.
ps. The 924 2L has been dropped, but we have grandfathered in 2 cars that had been built and expressed an interest to race in the series/class.
