I am replacing the clutch, pressure plate on my ’88 N/A . When I put it together, the bolts are too short. Anybody had this problem?

The pressure plate bolts are too short? You sure the clutch disc isn't in backwards? Assuming new hardware, correct pressure plate and correct disc and proper machine work. How short is too short? Are you saying they won't actually reach and are the correct length? Or the ones you bought are too short (shorter than normal).

Oh, there you are. Did you compare the old PP to the new PP and check the hole depth; i.e. PP thickness at the hole location?
I'm right in the middle of my 84 N/A clutch job too. So I have everything apart and know what your looking at.

Ok so it's not going to reach it because of the new space. The pressure plate will have a distance. Here is a picture of what you'll likely see...

The pressure plate bolts will barely thread in and hold the pressure plate in. Make sure the clutch disc isn't in backwards. Are you using the italian clutch? or the sachs clutch? or the oem clutch? If it's backwards you'll have a HUGE gap and they will not reach. With the clutch in correctly using the alignment tool you'll have a small gap and the bolts will thread in. Then you need to tighten the allen bolts in a TRIANGLE FASHION, middle first, then outer bolts, then inner bolts, even torque. it will take a few to do it, they slowly tighten down.

Here's a link to the clutch tutorial I wrote with LOTS of pictures.

The italian clutch should have the space in the picture i showed you above, the pressure plate will not touch the flywheel until the bolts are tightened all the way. they will hang out a little bit. if they won't reach at all your disc is in backwards or something is not lined up right. you are using the alignment tool, etc etc..

ok so it's not stepped... Normally the pressure plate would sit on the stepping. Then the clutch down in the flat area. You're sure the pressure plate sent to you is for the exact year?
