or look here for all the scoop - I cancelled my E46 M3 SMGII order as soon as I heard about these rumours, then looked for & found a 951S instead!

Cayenne is actually Spanish for "family truckster."

Overall, I think the Cayenne is a bad idea, simply because I want to see Porsche concentrating on making great sports cars.

Porsche already has the Boxster as its 'entry level' cabriolet. It makes sense to launch an 'entry level' coupe.

I've heard the rumors of the Boxster coupe... While I'm sure it would be fun to drive, it seems to contradict the car's 550 Spyder inspirations.

Better to bring back a spiritual successor to that hugely successful icon of the 80's - the 944!

What 550 inspiration? Pure marketing subterfuge. The 550 was built to be a race car. The Boxster was built to separate the image conscious from their money. The only place I've ever heard of Boxsters racing is in PCA events. And it's hardly what a Porsche has always been. It used to be Porsches were built to be raced.

I do. An entry level car will attract a new customer base to the Porsche marque. Porche hopes to attrach these new customers and keep them around: over time, these new Porsche owners will upgrade to the Boxster, then the 911, and when they need to haul their family somewhere, the Cayenne. (Ok, maybe not all new Porsche buyers will have 4 Porsches in their stable, but you get the idea) Makes perfect sense to me.

Why do you think the new Mercedes C-Class looks soo much like the S-Class? For the same reasons!
Betcha the 'new 944' will have the now trademark Porsche nose as well. (Something I believe they call brand-identity or affiliation)

It's all about marketing these days. And finding new markets for your product.

Yeah! And the same goes for the 944! Can you believe Porsche would try to sell us an underpowered, front-engined, water cooled, Volkswagen? Whatever happened to REAL Porsches? Errrrr, wait a minute...

The continual bashing of other people's cars would be funny if it were not so common and tiresome...

It reminds me of a saying... "What's the proper definition of a real Porsche? The one that you have sitting in your driveway."

It's human nature (amongst SOME humans, anyway) to justify what you've got and criticize the rest.

Was anyone ever able to scan the drawing of the new 948 from the magazine?

I Know I will... there you have it, they have
ONE sold already!
Unless the new 928 falls into my price range.

I like VWs, but the 944 is no Volkswagen. <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" /> I don't know yours, but my cars' engines were built by Porsche at Zuffenhausen, not in Wolfsburg.

In any case the 944 could be called an Audi with a Porsche engine and I for one would seriously consider buying an entry level car with these characteristics if it was offered today.

Well dude, I guess we will have to fight for #1 948 Owner in the states!

IF the car is everthing I want to be(225hp and 2500lbs) and could be at 30K base of course.

While I am looking at my financial picture right now I am not looking to sell anything... yet....

I was just kidding about the 944 being a VW. It's a REAL PORSCHE. At least it looks that way to me.

Here's a sketch of the proposed Boxster Coupe. I think it really does exist, but time will tell whether it ever sees the light of day.

One thing... the current Porsche management is very cost savvy, using many common parts between the 986 & 996 lines. It would make good business sense to build the entry level coupe on an existing platform like the 986 (major cost savings by using existing parts).

I think Porsche must be doing some good marketeing to still be able to sell the boxter for that much. I bet their marketing people could sell snow to eskimos.

As long we a speculating (with Porsches money)
How bout... they reintroduce the 928...
then they down grade the Boxster and lower it's price.
They wouldn't do that you say?
They introduced and charged extra for a turbo S model...

In the case of the current P-car front, I would call it affliction.
