Porsche will reintroduce 944 in 2005!

I’m really disappointed in the new Porsches. First off all a 75k+ 911 interior should not have 80% plastic in it. Also when I was in the dealership checking the 911/boxster out they just don’t have that famous Porsche door shut sound like the old Porsches. When I shut the door in the new series Porsches all I got was plastic throb, vibrating sounds. Just look at the classifieds and look at the majority of the used 911/boxster leather seats…I mean wow it looks like a war has happened on them. My 87 951 with 200k miles has leather seats in better shape than most 911s and Boxsters. I just feel the CEO of Porsche is all about making the Product more profitable which means cutting quality issues which is has obviously done. All I hear is the Porsche CEO bragging about how they are the most profitable car company per vehicle. I really would wish they would bring back the 951, it has been one of my favorite cars since its introduction in 86.

The Boxsters are having trouble selling because they've been mass produced and PCNA president himself admitted in a Pano interview that they've had a lot of quality control problems.
The 350Z may be a performer as a new car, but look at how old your 944 is and have a look around at how many 15+ year-old Nissan or Datsun "rice rocket" cars can hold a candle to its timeless design and durability.
That's what real Porsches are all about. IMHO, the Boxster is not as much a Porsche as any 944. The last real Porsche as far as build quality goes was the 993 and the 996 is its substitute, not the crummy 986. Good luck Porsche A.G. in building a worthy 944 replacement.
Just my $0.52

The only thing I've seen is in the Road and Track. The car looks like a Boxter hatch-back. The article states"
Porsche's 1-Series?
While speculation about a fifth Porsche model (after the Cayenne and Carrera GT) has centered around a return of the 928 2+2 GT, rumors have cropped up about a possible entry-level (for Porsche that means $30,000) hatchback to rival the new BMW 1 Series and VW Golf models equipped with the Passat's 3.2-liter V-6. The car would be rear drive and sport the Porsche family face, with power coming from the Boxster's flat-6.
Probably another unfounded rumor from Road and Track.

How many of you guys have actually called porsche and tell them what you want???
Ill bet very few...
all talk no action...
you know the number 1800-porsche.
When ever i call i always thell them i want a new front engine/hatch back porsche.
At one time the guy said that he had been getting quite a few request to bring back the 968
and he said they listen to all requests he mentions thats how a few things on the 996 got changed because cutomers asked for it.
But you guys are too far out just wishing... DO SOMETHING.. Ive got some phone and fax#'s to some of the design guys at the factory, but i doubt you guys would put them to good use.

You've got a point. Maybe I wimp out because I feel I already own the best bang-for-the-buck Porsche ever built: a factory 951S cabriolet.
Try building something like that ever again, Porsche A.G.!

I think porsche should follow nissans lead. I like the 350z as far as the design is concerned, but its certainly could use some help in the looks dept.
What posche needs to do is price the car at $29,850, so when you end up with all the tequipment, it ends up at 36K.
As far as engine is concerned, if they take the 1.8T I would hope they could enlarge it to 2.2-2.4.
I mean take a look at the honduh s2k 2 liter at 240 hp,
I would prefer an 2.4-3.2 inline 6 turbo
Who says porsche isnt about power, its a porsche, you better beable to back up that name, If a 4door family car has 250 hp, any and every porsche had better have atleast thet much, the porsche name just doesn't mean as much and more.
At thise point id rather get an M3 with SMG tranny than a 996.(and just might)
I mean how can a new porsche have less power than porsche built 10-15 years ago?
right now the boxter should have 300 hp and the 996 400 and the turbo 500 and the gt2 600, but noooo now the porsche is a fur coat, you want power you have to get a viper or z06
theres power to weight ratio but whats more important power to price ratio

Luis de Prat, so you think what makes a Porsche is the fact that quality cars were made 15-20 years ago? Just because a current car has a long and lengendary heritage does not mean that the quality can be tuned down and it still be a legendary car that people are willing to spend 75 grand on. If the 350Z is a quality product for less money... is the Porsche name all that makes it worthwhile. If it's a Porsche, it better be damn faster and made with more quality materials than a Nissan.
Now for the new 944, I hope they do make one. Maybe by then I'll be able to afford a new car, and what better than a 944 series
And for God's sake would people try to make just a little sense? I can't read half of the sentences in this forum without trying to interpret.

You are right. The 986 is a poor excuse for a Porsche, and overpriced at that. My point was that the MSRP $18,000 1983 944 was a REAL Porsche for the money. They've had tons of quality problems with the Boxsters whereas the 944s are still daily drivers for those who have bothered to keep up with/restore them.
Conversely, where are the RX7s of the early '80s? Would you care to own one? Name a single classic "rice rocket." Porsches are exclusive cars, period.
The closest they came to affordability was the 944, when Dr. P. came out and straightened out the "bastard P-car" controversy, publicly stating that the company had designed and fitted an authentic Porsche engine in the 944, and later in the series they also became expensive cars at that. IMHO the company got it all wrong when they tried the Japanese mass marketing concept with the Boxster.

What else could we do to change their minds? Porsche does not seem to listen to the real enthusiasts anymore. Look what happened to the air-cooled engine. It is all about the bottom line to the factory now. That is why I am dedicated to the Porsches from the 80's and early 90's. It would be great if we could change their minds, but it looks doubtful. I hate being so negative ( I hate all these 911 clones even more) but I am trying to be realistic.

I think some extra displacement would be nice, but that would also mean that anything over 2l (not even thinking in terms of euro tax criteria it has to meet) it would most likely have to have balance shafts and that would mean completely throwing out the block and starting from scratch

Very difficult to install a flat Porsche 6 in a front engine configuration. Steering interference is the problem.
In addition, I have written to Porsche and received not even an acknowledgement. Even a geneic postcard would have been nice......
