Default UPDATES 2/14! How to turbo your S, the right way! (pic heavy)

As some of you know, I spun a bearing back in January of this year and have embarked on a complete overhaul of my car 944S. It is now becoming a turbo.

Ive been collecting the various parts needed for this type of transplant and I figure it would be great for anyone who is attempting or wants to attempt something similar.

I bought a complete engine from an 87' turbo with the intention of a complete transplant. Insert, "you should just buy a turbo" here. Yea well, those of us living in California in the city don't have the space for two cars.

I decided part of the way through to completely rebuild the block as well. I had the block sleeved, pics on the way, so that everything is going together relatively new. Unfortunately, the turbo block I used did not like the sleeves and cracked!

I had to go back and use the block from my S and it went together like a charm. It's already November and there is still no engine in the car. But, it's mostly due to me taking my time and doing everything well.

Here are some pictures of my work thus far.

The process of pulling the S motor.

Engine Out!

Love these empty engine bays :P

Rod number 4, you bastard...

Don't move to California, this is my workspace, lol

Rebuilt K26/8, just got it in the mail today. Thank you Performance Tech in San Bernadino.

Rebuilt fuel injectors from WitchHunter Performance, thanks guys!

930 clutch disc, the rest of the assembly is being balanced

3 piece crossmember, i should be getting the LR 3 piece crossover pipe tomorrow

I'll be posting more on this, I'd like to keep this thread alive for a while to clearly document this process. By the end, I'll have a complete list of parts needed for this transplant and hopefully some helpful tips for you crazy p-car folks.

12/6 Update:

After spending about 22 hours this weekend, I've made A LOT of progress. The engine itself is mostly assembled and I've included a few pictures of this little ole project of mine.

Ready to go from the machine shop!

Drive train!

Balance shafts go in smoothly...

Pistons and balance shafts in

Oil pickup tube with LR addition to it

Monday morning, the sum total of the weekend work...

I have seen problems with cracked sleeves/block under heavy boost. I believe there is a sleeving method where the tops of the the cylinder bores are connected to strengthen them. The S block is pretty much identical to the turbo block and you won't have any piston grouping problems as you are sleeving them. Have you gotten the DME/KLR, intercooler, and many of the related parts for your transplant? I am looking for a good crank and one turbo rod (I am too lazy to take the engine out of one of my parts cars) and can trade you stuff for your spares. I am in Long Beach.

I'm in the middle of swapping a turboS engine in my 944

Well, it was supposed to be a turboS. The guy said it came from a turboS car
Yet it has a k26/6 (that needs a rebuild)..
And it doesn't have a 2 piece crossover..

Whatever, too much trouble to return.

@LegoLand: Yes, I do need a number of parts still, PM me with what you got.

I'll also be letting go of basically ALL the S motor parts as well, from the exhaust to the ecu in case anyone is interested

I'm using the stock 951 intake, it is sort of a weird project. It is essentially combining bits of both motors together to create one. I'm really attached to this car which is why I think it's worth the extra work.

Ultimately, this will be a streetable track type machine. Down the line I'd like to do the rear seat delete DIY, roll bar, the suspension, but, for now, I've got to get it running!

So will this be 16v or not? How are you doing engine management?

It will be an 8v and I'll be using the stock dme set. Eventually, I'll move to some tuning.

Nice project

Why did you get 930 and not 951 clutch?

The S block is identical to a 951 or the n/a for a late 944.

I just noticed you took the motor out with the bell housing. That must have been a bitch and you probably scratched up your hood latch receiver tab. A better way is to leave the bell housing and the clutch assembly on the torque tube and drop the motor in with only the flywheel. You have to make sure the 3 sets of 3 pressure plate bolts are lined up properly while you bolt it back from the starter hole.

I've got the S head/pistons just waiting for a good home.

You could basically assemble the entire motor minus the crank and 1 con rod. The S motor that is. I have the S tranny too because it's a bit different than all the other trannies. I've got my turbo tranny waiting to go in.

Better yet, I'll just make a separate post for all the S motor parts I have. There are so many.

Yea, I pulled it off with the bellhousing on. It was a PITA to get it out. But, yea, I'll put it in with only the flywheel this time.

I used the 930 clutch disc because it is not only the same width as the turbo disc, 240mm, but it will last longer too. I lightened my flywheel, so, I'm imagining the disc will last a bit shorter anyways. I got it down to around 10 lbs.
