Default 944 Wing Project

I have been wanting to sketch up a wing for a 944, but I'm having a hard time finding a reference. I figured I would need some sort of wind tunnel testing data or at least a SolidWorks model of the car itself in order to create a wing profile that would best suit the car. I contacted Porsche about said data, but no luck there.

I am a 3rd year mechanical engineering student at Rice University. This project would benefit both the Rice SAE and Clunkers 4 Kids (Richard Jackson's group). Any information that you guys could provide to help get us started will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

post a picture of what you've got so far.

relize the higher up into the airstream a wing is the better the airflow on, therefore more downforce. however, you still want it to fit the shape of the car.

There is a picture on my gallery of my wing project, including a chord picture of the wing.

The wing is from a vette aftermarket company. Their mounting point was pretty low, but I figure the vette must need a lotta downforce at the back. I plan to run the wing flat to minimize the frontal area.

If you want to "engineer" a wing, which you should being a ME student, start by going to the library and getting the Carroll Smith books. Wing design principles will be in Design to Win, Prepare to Win, and Tune to Win. (He adds to his knowledge base as he published the various books).

Just a hint. A 944 is already a very balanced car. Putting a wing on the back by itself will just muck up the works. If you are going for more downforce, you need to work with both ends of the car.

BTW Dave Floyd - Love the pressure plots. Great stuff!

Here is a link to Foilsim, a wing simulator.

Here is the updated version.

Wow thanks a lot guys!

@thirdgenbird - Richard found the 924 project some funding and it is coming along nicely. I will start a thread and post pics of progress soon. The block is put together and I am ready to start prepping the body.

@dykaar - That online airfoil simulator is pretty cool. Did you do your project using it? I guess my concern is how does the body affect the airstream? Seems like this simulation assumes laminar flow at the inlet. How does this assumption affect out real downforce/drag?

@David Floyd - Those pressure plots are great. Thanks a bunch.

@harveyf - I will find the Carroll Smith books asap. This is exactly what I am looking for. As far as balance is concerned, I am aware of that adding downforce to the rear alone might have negative overall value. I plan on doing a flat underbody package, and a front lip to complement the wing if all goes well.

Cheers,
Guil

I did not, the wing was prefab, but I tried plugging in a similar shape to see what happens. The more higher up and farther back you place the wing, the more effective it is. I figured to keep the wing below the top of the car to minimize frontal area to start.

I'm sure the sim assumes everything is ideal and as long as the wing angles are small, laminar flow should be a good assumption.
