Default Previous oil unknown.... go with synthetic or mineral?

I recently bought a 1991 944 Cabrio. Car had been sitting for about a year. It had a bad relay that I fixed and it fired right up. Now I don't know what oil was being put in it before. Should I go with full synthetic or good old dino juice? I'm not starting another oil weight war.... that has apparently been done to death. The only thing the manual says is use a Porsche recommended oil. So what are exactly the Porsche recommended oils??

Buy a few cases of Brad Penn Racing Oil...whatever weight you desire. Done.

Most likely the oil in it would have been synthetic & for your 944S2 I'll suggest using weigth 20w50 in any good quality oil (like you said don't want to start another oil war witch will last for weeks). If the car his driven in very cold weather go with 10W40.

Yes, do the 20W50 synthetic unless it is a very low mileage car. I have used that stuff in my 1985 944 for some years, I always go a full 12 months between oil changes because it lasts longer. The higher weight is better for high-mileage engines. Don't make the mistake of using thin synthetic that would be put in a brand new Porsche, you will dry-start a 944 really badly.

Those racing oils are meant for cars without catalytic converters. You guys have no cat or just use it despite the warning on the site? This car isn't going to be tracked or driven all that hard. Just looking for a good reliable oil. What did Porsche use in the 90's when they changed the oil in these cars?

I don't have a cat - easy to pass inspection (anywhere but someplace that they visually inspect of course...but then that's not all that hard to get by either...) with no cat. I've done it two years in a row in Texas.

what motor oil to run is a religion.... mobil 1 0w-40 winter/mobil 1 15w-50 summer.

you can change the filter every 5 k miles and add this zddp additive. the oil can be run for up to 15 k miles easily.

1. 0w-40 flows down to near absolute zero when your engine desperately needs to get some lube in cold weather.

2. it meets or exceeds the performance of conventional 50 weight oil at operating temperature.

there's a reason why mobil reccommeds running the 0w-40 year round for the 968 engines.

1. because they race this oil all over the place.

2. they KNOW what it can do... that it will not contribute to an engine failure.

it's the same oil my mechanic puts in hundreds of P-cars. he has the largest shop in new england.

for the 944....... the Mobil 10w-40 High Mileage might be the best winter oil... it has an additive to protect engine seals, and protects up to 15 k miles, with regular filter changes then you can run the thicker synthetic in the summer.

many of the guys here race... they're pretty sure about what oil they should run and they have good success running the thicker oils. so they're probably right when it comes to the 944.

i want my engine to get high oil flow at startup so i run the 0w-40 Mobil 1.

the 0w-40 is the best cold weather oil in the world and it's still too thick at startup.

i run the engine hard with zero oil or pressure loss with this oil. my 3rd winter running it.

Just curious...why do you think it most likely was synthetic?

Well my Porsche mechanic (and shop owner) said that 0W40 synthetic would destroy my 944's engine because it is not viscous enough.
That's why he insisted on 20W50.

+1 x million never mind that thin oil BS ____to Dr Feelgood if you want to keep your S2 alive as suggested 20W50 or in cold weather 10w40 nothing else, don't forget nobody but you is gone to be stuck with repair bills if your not using the rigth type of oil for your car. Also pay close attention to the oil filter replacement witch should be either (Porsche OE or Malhe OC142 )Personnally & I'll say 80% of 944 - 968 owners are using Mahle in their car.

who said anything about running a thin oil ? i've never so much as 1 time mentioned running thin oil.

ask an Mobil 1 engineer if 0w-40 oil is a thin oil. not even close. what it is is a high-technology oil.

if your engine burns it, or the oil pump fails to respond, then it's too thin.

for a 20 + year old 944, i would imagine that's possible.

my engine would have exploded a long time ago.
