Suspended! (long)
Well it's my wife this time. Last time I got suspended was about 5 years ago, it sucks. Anyway, she should be getting suspended. She got a six pointer in Allendale, SC, a small, poor ticket writing town. We talked to the clerk when she got the ticket, and they told us that her court date on the ticket was wrong. It was 8-19-02, but the cop wrote it on the ticket for 9-19-02. I straightened out with the clerk and was able to work a deal that if I paid the full $325!!! they would knock it down to careless driving and there would be 0 points. Well she got a certified letter two days ago saying that she got 12 points in 12 months, she had a 4pointer, >10mph, and a two pointer <10mph speeding tickets, and was getting suspended. The 6 point ticket did not get knocked down to 0 points. She called the Allendale Clerk of Court and they said they would fax Columbia and straighten it out. Today they changed their mind. They said since we paid the ticket late, we paid it 9-4-02, they would not fix it. Problem is, the ticket said we had until 9-19-02, over two more weeks to pay it.
In SC, a point suspension is like a DUI. You have to take a class, pay $100 reinstatement, 3 month no driving, and THREE YEARS SR-22 insurance. All this because the stupid country mf'rs can't do data entry right. They took our $325, but didn't honor their end of the deal.
Any way to get around a suspension? It doesn't go effective until 5-15-2003 and we live on the SC-GA border. I could easily send her to Augusta to get a GA license before it hits, I don't know if they would catch it. I did it myself once with VA and FL, but that was like 10 years ago.
Hopefully, we'll get Allendale County to fix their screw up, but they already got our money 8 months ago.

do the crime, do the time. next time tell her not to get caught.
It probably would have worked out better if you had refused to pay the ticket and insist on getting the court date that the officer wrote.
Basically anytime you PAY the ticket, you admit to the offence. I learned that the hard way too.

I had a court date where there was incorrect information (in this case, the exact day when the infraction occurred), and the judge threw it out.
on my current ticket, it shows one particular date and on the notice that was sent to my house and as it happens, it's a different date. they will always try and cover their asses, and i suspect if i went to the court date on the day written on the ticket, they would still serve me a warrant for an FTA (i moved and went back and happened to get the letter before the landlord threw it out).
play the game to win. if you don't work the system, the system will work *you*. usually getting another license in another state won't work as the systems are supposed to be networked (have access to each others databases). but if you were to do it early enough, you might get lucky that it won't show up on the system for a while and then you can get your wife another license. work it!

10 over is 4 points ? OUCH. Anyway, although it's a little late now, I find lawyers usually to be worth the investment in these critical type cases. We've had good luck getting my wife's little indiscretion reduced from 27 over to defective equiptment, still $375.00 in fees, court cost and fines, but no points and it doesn't go on the driving record as it becomes a non-moving violation. Still pending are my 17 over, and daughters disregarding a traffic control device (she swears it was pink), but the attorney assures us they'll be no problem. There has been a huge traffic law crackdown here lately BTW,,we think it has to do with the city and county having merged into a new "Metro" government,,and needing additional funds.

Well as long as you can claim residence somewhere, such as an aunt or parent's house or such. I believe it would be totally legal. I'm not sure of it but it may be...Good luck!

how about some free money?

Yeah the pay the fine get no points routine is common. They just want their money. When I paid the ticket, the clerk even made a copy of it and wrote "no points" across the top. If she has to "pay the time" for the clerical f**k up, I may not be able to afford Porsche insurance with a 3 year SR-22 insurance filer in the house.

a P.O. box in NC should do the trick. I did the same in VA and it was a snap. BTW am I the only one that hasnt had a ticket in a while?? The last I have ever been pulled was in 1998 and I usually hit 90+ on the way to to office 6 days a week.

"$50 for parking on the sidewalk"

If they did that in Boston you wouldn't be able to walk on the sidewalk. You get fined more than $50 for looking at a no parking zone as you drive past.
I know I'd risk the occasional $50 rather than the $25 a garage is going to charge for a short park.
Not that I'm going to bother going to Boston now that the smoking ban everywhere is in effect.
Let's see
Drive 45 minutes.
Drive around for another 45 minutes looking for parking
Pay $25 parking (assuming an event isn't going on or it will double)
So I can spend $5.00 for a beer and I can't even smoke.
F'that the shopping centers up here have parking lots.

Yeah dont feel bad Rob. My wife and I were on our way to Myrtle Beach last year and she got a ticket in Georgetown. We were coming out of Georgetown and the cop was siiting at the end of the bridge. She got a 60 in a 45 but he didnt pull the Tracker over that was right beside us! He dropped it to 55 in a 45 so it was only 50 bucks and two points apposed to $200 and 4 points!
BTW I bought my P-car out of Beaufort last year.
