Post NYC metro autox @ Tobay Beach sunday, whos going?

Who's going?
I'll probably be there.

It'll be my first...do I need to make any provisions prior to arrival to make sure I get an instructor?

Tech-inspection is at the autox from what I've read...not much choice anymore if its not.

Adrial, Relax, It's not that tough. Get there early, go to the registration table, sign in, mention that you are new at this and ask who you need to see for an instructor. You will also be told where to bring the car for tech insp. (on site, before event). Walk the course until you KNOW it, you will meet people while doing this, Don't be shy, tell 'em you are a rookie. You will get more advice this way than you can imagine (mostly good ). Most important, RELAX and have a good time, I can't make this one, but as long as you enjoy the event I'm sure I'll see you somewhere during the season.

My first event, I'm second or third from the start line, first run of the day. A guy I'd never seen before sticks his head in the passenger side window, and asks "this your first event?". I nod yes, and he says "go slow enough that you don't use the brakes the first run, learn the course, then take off 5 seconds per run"

It worked!

Thanks.

This is just the begining...DE's are next (april 13th and 14th for sure @ Pocono).

I'm wondering though, I've always been carefull about not taking it above 3500rpm when the oil isn't up to temp (based on oil pressure)..I would figure the car will be sitting around/idling and then all of a sudden they'll say go and I'll be off...but what about my babied-when-cold engine? hehe

You will most likely get 3-4 AM runs, then later, 3-4 PM runs, You will still be warm from the drive there in the AM so idling will get you back up to full temp in no time. You will be more concerned with cooling it off between runs for the rest of the set. PM just idle should get you back up to near full temp.

We all still on for the NNJR autox 4/21? Any plan for another get together before that?

im so clueless..

i just got my 944 2 months ago.. and an autocross (you get to race around a track right?) sounds kinda fun.. but does one need to do anything special to ones vehicle for this? i'm always seeing things about rollbars and needing a helment, what about that stuff? is this sort of thing really really amatuer? like.. anyone can come, sign up, and mess around? how much does it cost btw?

i would like to go, im going to be home this next week for spring break.. maybe it would be fun.. i dont know what it involves though.. so.. just wondering if anyone wants to give a newbie some facts

I'm going (but not driving, car in paint shop ), but I've never been to one before so I'd like to check it out anyway. Probably bring my dad and his 911. See you there.

Simon,

Autocrosses are usually held in large parking lots, or at airfields. Courses are set up using traffic cones, and one at a time drivers drive the course against the clock, getting some number of runs throughout the day. People who participate seem to have a great time driving and socializing, and it is an excellent opportunity to push the car and yourself a bit, and learn important car control skills.

They are very amateur (in the good sense) at the PCA club level (not to say some of the driver's aren't really impressive) and everyone is welcome, experienced or not. Instructors are provided. No special car prep is required, but you'll need a helmet if you want to run. I don't know if loaners are typically available, maybe.

There is also a CT Valley Region autocross this weekend, in Springfield. Check the region's website for the event you are interested in for additional info. I don't know if pre-registration is necessary.

I don't think its going to rain that early in the morning. it'll be a little chilly on the beach, but not enough to keep me home.

Tobay Beach is in Oyster Bay, or at least that's where I got the permit for the pole I put up next to the maint. bldg. in the corner of the lot. Don't worry about the weather, it'll be the same for everyone there.
