almost all of the torque tubes are bad. plain and simple. no fire, just lots of noise.

can a loss of life occur ?
im sure if you got creative.

when is it time to change it's bearings.
when they get too noisy.

does this action contribute to a longer life of the car or does it just look good ?
probably helps, less vibration is always good for parts.

I don't understand your point. This is a Tech forum, not a Driving forum. Tech questions are mostly answered by guys who have (at least at some point) done their own work, therefore had their car off the road for some period, rather than swiping their plastic at the stealership service counter.

Thats the way I do it as well. I love driving the 951 so much, I can't stand to have it undriveable.

When a tt "fails" it just starts making noise. I've never heard of a tt ceasing to work or seizing.

yes, this was my point exactly... except where major engine and transmission surgery is concerned.

i realize most of the guys do a remarkable job staying ahead of almost everything.

i'm very lucky in that, i beat the crap out of my car and it's never been in a shop overnight since the birth of the car.

FWIW, I did not rebuild mine due to bearing failure. The previous owner let the throughout bearing guide sleeve break and just kept driving the car until it destroyed the spines on the TT shaft. So I rebuild it to get a fresh shaft, the bearings were just replaced as part of the rebuild.
