I posted in the past about my poor running and new to me '83. Turns out the DME is bad so I am planning on buying a rebuilt one. Since mine has never run good enough to find out if I have the classic stumble issue that most had, my question is this. Should I purchase a late model DME and matching AFS vs my early one to eliminate the stumble issue ? Also , I understand this would allow the DME to be chipped although I understand the gains are not huge. I plan on tracking and autocrossing the car so this type of stumble could really be annoying. Some say the FR Wilk chip is certainly worth it.
Thanks

I would suggest going with the late DME/AFM. If you do then you could use the DIY tuning, and tune the car yourself:

Ah yes, I looked at your tuner awhile back but I was jumping the gun a little considering the state of my 944. Does TunerPro include any type of baseline performance tune over stock I could start with before tweaking parameters ?

No the base tune is what is supplied. But most aftermarket chips aren't anything special - it is all stuff you can do on your own with TunerPro. I would be happy to answer any questions.

Keep the early DME. You can run the late stuff, but it is best to use a late DME harness and idle stablizer valve. Much easier just put in the right DME and be done with it. Consider 5 min fix vs 4-5 hours.

Late AFM, Idle stabilzer valve (must remove intake manifold) and DME harness. If you cannot get a 924S DME harness you will need to adjust some connectors to make a 944 DME harness work.
There are a few different pin outs on the DME for early vs late. You can mix the harness and DME, but don't expect it to run perfectly at idle. It is workable for a track car, but not acceptable for a street car.

For a street car it is far easier to just use an 83-85 DME than deal with all the rest of the crap on mix stuff.
