Default What's the best OEM exhaust alternative?

What's the best alternative for a factory like sounding 924S or alike early 944 exhaust system? I'm not looking for something louder, but I can't justify spending over $1,000 to get both a new OEM muffler and catalytic converter.

Currently, I'm running a straight pipe, cat-delete, borla XR-1 muffler setup. The reason I did that was because my original muffler and catalytic converter were bad and needed replacement. While I liked the sound at first, I've just gotten tired of it after driving 12k+ miles on the current setup. I don't mind a nice exhaust note when I'm hitting 5k+ rpm, but I've just become unhappy with it howling every time I touch the gas pedal from 2k RPM's.

When I bought a 944S2 with a good stock exhaust, at first I thought it was too quiet and wanted to upgrade it. But I've come to realize that most of the time I just enjoy quietly cruising. Sure, nailing it in a car with a good aftermarket setup over pass can be exciting, but that's not what I'm out to do 9/10th's of the time.

So what's my best option for a stock sounding alternative to the high dollar OEM muffler and catalytic converter's?

The dansk, iirc Paragon has it cheaper than pelican does. I need one too, mine has a few holes in it (too many car washes)

I can shoot video of the Dansk on my 88 N/A if you want... I liked it so much, I put one on my 951 after I bought it... alas the 951 Dansk Muffler will soon be up for sale... along with the rest of the exhaust, intake tract, turbo and a few other bits here and there.....

Recently, I put a Dansk on my '89 NA and I love it. At idle it sounds stock but put your foot down and the tone changes. When cruising at highway speeds, I don't notice any weird harmonics. It's a nice exhaust and not too expensive. Good luck.

Does it sound like this?

If so, that's close enough to stock to me. It might have a little more pitch, but I like it based on these videos. It's not nearly as loud as the setup I'm running now....

I put a 93 968 exhaust on my 87 944..Sounds awesome....purrs at idle with that low rumble sound..not loud but you definately sounds nice..and at speed it's quiet..Had the magnaflow and it was just too loud cruising..that awful droaning hum...Larry at 20th St auto in Phoenix has a few laying around the yard...and in good condition...and it's BOLT ON...Lemme find a pic....has the pre muffler too..you would just need to order the exhaust hangar for the rear that hangs from torque tube.....probably $200 for a factory stainless steel porsche exhaust.......got the exhaust tip from Vertex

Is this what you are referring to? It doesn't cost as much as the one on Pelican, but I don't see it stating anywhere that it's a Dansk, or anything else for that matter. What type of muffler am I looking at here?

Here is the Dansk, priced higher, as shown on Pelican.

I noticed that Paragon offers a catalytic converter as well.

for a quiet exhaust,

change to something like a flowmaster muffler. not great power but just the sound you are describing....

they make a 3 chamber that's plenty quiet. add the resonator from my thread.

od, did you ever take a vid of your exhaust? if you have a digital camera you can do one just like i did.

I'm going to put another vote in for flowmaster, i really like they're mufflers. Check out their website and some of their sound clips, they've got a lot of different sounds and styles to choose from, maybe one will fit the bill?

also, i highly dislike the sound of the dansk, at least in those videos...it's sounds very eurotrash tuner to me. My stock 944 n/a exhaust had a very nice note to it, a lot of people liked it, even most other porsche owners. I need to take a look, but it's possible my cat was gutted or something like that, which gave it a special sound, because it had a nice throaty rumble, but it wasn't thunderous and didn't really resonate.

I'm running the Dansk system and can say mine sounds nothing like the car in the video's. However, I'm also running a Stainless Works tube style muffler in place of the cat.
