Dude, K&N and an open exhaust will probably net in a hp loss. One time at the track, my exhaust cracked and completely disconnected at the weld at the cat, so essentially it was straight headers. It was a noticeable drop in power and torque.
4 cylinders do not sound bad in general... I've heard a lot of nice ones, too many bad ones sure, but it depends.
v8 rumble is played imo.
