Default my valve cover, fuel rail cover and intake are disgusting....

my valve cover, fuel rail cover and intake are disgusting....

1. can anyone offer any ideas on how to get them nice like the first photo... ? or,

2. maybe do like the second photo.... i picked up some black, hi-temp, wrinkle paint, and black, high-temp gloss for the valve cover.

but how do you get the intake and fuel rail cover to chome like the second photo ?

i'm also thinking of going black (like the 2nd photo) on the valve cover, then, just cleaning up the fuel rail cover and intake -- only -- how ??

can anyone offer advice, opinions ? thanks.

the first photo is from TexOne's post for his 968 he has for sale.

i don't recall who's the owner of the 968 in the second photo...

i love the wrinkle finish..but to get the nice aluminum color, a good chemical tanking should get most dirt and grease off. spend some time with a soft brush going over it and then maybe take some fine sand paper to the surface. paint it silver if you wish

Lots of sanding, followed by more sanding.

Send the parts to lart, he has a good polishing hook up.
I got this from Lart no long ago.

That would be my old car in photo #2. I'll never do that again....

That mirror finish intake and glamour cover are the product of a lot of sweat. Sand the 2 parts smooth then begin polishing.

from the link:

"My advice: be very wary of tackling this job. It took me well over 240 hours to do my manifold and it was a challenge every step of the way.

"Not only will 120 grit paper not do the job...you'll need 80, 120, 200, 400, 600, and 1200. And THEN you move to the polishing grits and the polishing rouges. You'll also need polishing and sanding heads or all shapes and sizes along with the equipment to drive them (drills, dremel tools, die grinders etc etc.). I hate to say it but my advice is to either have the manifold powder coated or have a shop do the polishing for you. And no, sandblasting does not work (as explained in one of the links below).

"Obviously, some guys like Ron Castle have a knack and love for this sort of work. But be warned. It ain't for sissy's..... Here are a few links to my own experiences trying to polish a manifold. Also the final link shows RCastle's experiences with polishing..."

I polished a set of Mickey Thompson valve covers for a sbc a few years ago.

It took forever and only took one winter of neglect to tarnish.

I'll powdercoat next time.

One of my favorite ways to polish a regular look and just make it look nice is to soak my nasty parts in a mixture of water and degreaser to get the crap off (or just sandblast that stuff) and then go after it with simichrome or mother's polish.

If you actually want the brushed look on aluminum sanding it down till it's smooth and then going after it with some rough steel wool gives the brushed look. Or you can also follow the above tutorials (man those are great!) to smooth and polish.

Either way you cut it, you'll spend some time and elbow grease.

I went to 2500 on the sand paper the polished with a buffing wheel using ruoge. (sp)?
It held up very good for 3 years. I just hit it by hand once a year with mothers.

I'd suggest powder coating. Trouble free and very durable...

I think Ernie's metalcast solln is the best bang-for-buck, and I will be doing that further down the road. The hand-polished headers and intakes always scream to to me "my owner has no life!" (Sorry! )
