Post Seen the Cayenne? I gotta vent again!

I saw the press release shots over on the Cayenne forum. That thing is an abortion. I think it looks bad at every angle. I hope Porsche feels great financial pain for this project. Maybe it will get them focused back or racing and performance not Toyota looking garbage like the Cayenne.

Who the hell needs a 80K or more SUV? Do the owners of 80K SUV’s bring then to the snow? Or drive them in bad weather? How about letting the kids eat crackers and chocolate in the back?

HELL NO!

Want to camp with your 80K SUV? Hunting? Fishing? Tow your boat? How about leave it in the parking lot and go hiking for a few days, you think it will be there when you get back? This has got to be the stupidest vehicle Porsche has ever come up with.

What a joke.

I feel better now.
(Sorry to post in 2 areas I messed up)

people who would buy it, wouldn't buy it because of it's practicality. I think it's pretty attractive.

Tell that to a guy I knew in Atlanta back in '89 who had a gray market Gelandewagen, he drove it off road a lot.

And I actually think the Cayenne is kind of cute. Paris/Dakar here comes Porsche to kick your ***. I know if I had one I would drive it off road a lot just to prove that it was capable.

Fletch,

Just went to the Cayenne forum to take a peek. It doesn't do a thing for me. Maybe it'll grow on me but that hope might be a bit of wishful thinking for this bloke. I won't be making a special trip to the local Porsche dealer to "see it in person."

Manning:

Porsche Factory already has two outright wins at the Paris-Dakar Rally

959 won in 1986
911 Carrera 4 in 1984

Driver: René Metge
Co-Driver: Dominique Lemoyne

Personally, I think this is a more impressive victory. Not to say I don't like the Cayenne. If I was Daddy Warbucks - one would probably find it's way in my garage.....

Fletch... I must say, you've made one of the best arguments I've heard so far as to why a Cayenne is a pointless vehical. I especially like the part about the kids in the back seat with crackers and chocolate.

Any chance they'll come out with a Warner Brothers edition with the popdown LCD monitor, Game Cube, and a complete DVD collection of Bugs Bunny and Teletubies? THEN I'd buy one!

Hell yeah they did Jamie, and now they can do it again.

Looks to me like not too many cars run this classic anymore, just bikes, big trucks and little SUVs, well, and the Schlesser Buggies. This would be a perfect vehicle for this race.

Actually I really don't care for any modern SUVs, and I am glad there is a resurgence of stationwagons, since most SUVs are just stationwagons with a thyroid problem anyway. The only SUVs I have ever really been into are FJ40 through FJ60 Land Cruisers, early Broncos (the little ones) and Series 2 and 2A Rovers.

Cayenne will probably make a lot of money for Porsche, but at what cost?

Cayenne will change the Porsche brand image...who knows if it will ever be the same.

But the target market for Cayenne will probably buy it. Imagine....you are a Porsche nut (like all of us) and wifey wants to buy an SUV. If you have the bucks, you might as well get one that's fun to drive. And a P-car to boot!

Cayenne will sell to Soccer Moms, because it's a station wagon that the husbands might actually enjoy driving.

The only way for Porsche to make Cayenne fit with its image is to make it really aggressive, and it appears that they have not gone that route. So we're stuck with a high performance Soccer Mom mobile.

It is just sad that Porsche has managed to produce a vehicle that I do not want. A vehicle that I do not think is appealing.
Maybe the engine will find its way into a front engined 928 sort of vehicle to compete with the SL, who knows. I just know that something has changed - and I don't like it.

Ahhhhhh - what the heck is everyone here talking about???

Why wouldn't the owners take it off road?? Why wouldn't they let their kids eat cookies in the back?? Doesn't anyone here realize that the people who are going to be buying this are RICH RICH RICH people. They would have to be rich, seeing as any other person would by a Toyota or something if they wanted an SUV.

RICH people don't care about cookies in the back seat. If it's dirty - hell, buy a new back seat. RICH people don't care about the SUV getting dirty or knocked around off road. They will pay someone to fix it or clean it.

Duhhhhhh!

This is an SUV for guys who want to get their wife a Porsche.....period. They figure for every Boxer or 911 they sell, they can sell an SUV for the buyers wife. Or it's meant for guys who won't drive a Toyota or even a BMW SUV and the Hummer is just to big - thus the Porsche SUV.

It's a very simple theory folks!!!

I think part of the my issue with the Cayenne is not the vehicle itself at all, but rather Porsche's decision to build that type of automobile before expanding their current sports car line. It baffles me that this company was producing just 1 (ONE!) car in 1996. The current 996 and Boxster and great cars that certainly command their respective markets. However, I think there is room for a higher-end luxury car (which is probably coming from the Cayenne engine - completely backwards!) and a lower-end rev machine. Basically - stick the 924 and 928 back in the lineup!! I imagine they are done for good with 4 cylinder engines, but with the Boxster's hp & displacement numbers increasing -> wouldn't there be room for smaller 6, in coupe form only? Something to compliment the Boxster, not compete with it? I'd buy that car today - whereas I shy away from the ragtop/two-seater, and can't rationalize $70k+ for a 911.

Just my 2cents.

I'm pretty sure that there will be a Boxster coupe. One DEFINITELY has been designed and is prowling the backroads of Germany. But Porsche has not yet greenlighted the car.

That was a powerful statement, rpm....with Cayenne, Porsche has somehow managed to create a car that we don't want!

I would love to own an example of every car Porsche has made...but Cayenne drops to the bottom of the list.

What a bunch of narrow minded complainers.
Seems to me that Porsche has engineered everything from floating cars, tanks, airplane motors, TRACTORS.... you name it and they have probably been involved in the design of some pretty interesting motorized craft. Maybe some of these things were a little before our time, but I think Dr. Porsche would give A HUGE THUMBS UP for the design of the new Cayenne.
Just because they have chosen to design a very successful platform that the market cannot get enough of is in my opinion a sure thing.
There is a good chance that if someone had children and let them eat crackers and chocolate in the back, pretty sure that they can afford to have somebody clean it. And like a 911, I sure can't afford one.
And not drive it in the winter? I am sure the affluent Porsche crowd will trade in the Lexus or Benz to get a Cayenne as a substitute for their winter vehicle.
Quit your whining.
The Cayenne rocks.
Can't wait until it becomes the base motor for the 911 (or better yet the next generation sports cars when the 911 design is declared to be no longer the flagship ride for the Porsche marque.)
I saluted Porsche when they got rid of their air cooled motors and welcomed the 911 to the water cooled crowd, ala the 996.
Onward and upward and bravo to the Porsche engineers and design team!!!!!!!!!!
