Default 1989 944 S2 - Fix & Sell / Sell / Part Out

Hello all,

I'm the new owner of a non running 944 S2, timing belt issue (most likely a few bent valves). I'm trying to decide what the next step is for this car. I'm a purist when it comes to cars and would hate to part this thing out. Maybe someone can help, is there a demand for parts from this car that will save others? That's the only way I could justify parting it out.

The car itself has 236k on the odometer. The body is in decent shape (blue gray) except for a minor ding on the front nose, fender rot on both fronts and a small hit in the rear bumper cover. Interior is white leather with worn front seats and dash cracks from the sun.

The car is optioned as a 220, 454, 533, 573, 593, 650, 946 but the transmission was replaced a few years back and using an inspection mirror shows it now has an open diff based on the case marking AOS.

The top end was redone 28k miles ago but from the parts list, the belt tensioner and wheels were not replaced. Most likely the reason for the failure. The head was resurfaced and valve work was done so I'm sure changing the bent valves and timing accessories will get the car up and running again. I'll be pulling the head to confirm.

New clutch and drive train work, calipers, etc was done about 15k ago. The car has a stack of service records and has been very well maintained through it's history.

The bottom line is it was an impulse buy and I'm trying to decide the next step as quick as possible. I'm in NY, on Long Island if anyone is interested in taking a look at the car.

Hoping to hear feedback from members before I make a decision.

Thanks,
Jeff

Depending on what you paid for it will help determine the next step.

If anything, it's a reminder to change more than just the belt when doing the job. The tensioner is a key part that is also a wear item.

I picked up the car at a low enough price to keep any option open.

I really wish deals like this came up around this part of the country. It looks to be in pretty decent shape considering the miles. I wouldn't part it unless there is more wrong than just the engine. Look for a good used engine, swap it in and then sell it if you want the most $$ out of it and are mechanically inclined.

Fix it! That how I aquired my 944S. Today it's a beautiful machine that I'm very proud of. It took me some time to get where it is today but it was a labor of love. I did a lot of things myself but I also found a Porsche specialist for the more difucult projects. I just enjoy the looks I get in this machine. People saying "wow!" What a nice car that you don't see everyday. For me it was a car that I always wanted. I even passed on it the first time I saw it and purchased another project to work on which I turned around and traded for car that I now own and passed on the first time. I thought it would be too much work involved to get the 944 running right. I made a budget and tried to stick to it. After you see for yourself how easy they can be to maintain you may be happy that you did. I try to drive mine every sunny day that I can get. No rain! Just my thoughts about your car.

Since you got a good deal on it, I would fix it, like Jess2suityou said.

I purchased the car initially to compete in the SCCA Solo II STR class but the more I've crunched the numbers the more I've realized it's much more of an STX car in terms of performance (slower class). Unfortunately I don't have a good feeling that writing a letter will get it re-classed.

Thinking about the details, the cosmetic issues shouldn't be that hard to take care of. So at this point I'm leaning towards fixing and possibly selling it.

Default Rust

What causes that sort of rust damage? It looks like each rocker panel has been hit by the rust moths.

I noticed cracked paint at the rear seam just beside the 944 S2 logo. Was the car repainted at some point and taken down to bare metal, disabling the galvanizing?
