Post Inexpensive Roll Cage !! Anyone else interested ?

Okay,

Great news. I got a good quote from a roll cage fabricator in Mooresville, NC. It's called G and K Racecars. They said they would custom fabricate a light chromoly cage and weld it in for $600. I walked through their shop today. It is definitely a hole in the wall, but there's guys in their welding cages. I believe that is all they do. I don't believe I can pass on that price. If anyone has some good pictures of a 951 rollcage, I would be interested in them so I can take them to G and K for ideas. They said it would take about a week to install. Anyone else interested in getting a cage ??

Great work dave, thanks for finding that. I am adding my name to the list for that kind of price.

We need to bring a rule book to make sure it will be compliant with SCCA NASA and PCA rules.

That sounds like a pretty good price! I'm going to sleep on it, but I'm about 90% sure I'm in too!

I highly reccomend trying to find a finished example first. a few inches in the wrong direction can make life a living hell. My buddy's S2 is a pain in the BUTT to get into now. Among other things.

Can anyone with a roll cage please make some measurements such as location of the bars behind the seats, height of bar relative to roof and door, location of welds eccetera. Thank you.

Something like this might be a bit over the top, but I'm having a hard time finding pics of cages.

Holy cats!!! <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

That's only a little more than what I can buy the tubing for! I've been planning on doing my own cage, but that might be worth a trip to NC!

Gads, that cage is incredibly dangerous and scary. DO NOT have your main hoop bent like that. Nature will see those middle bends as instructions to "bend here." A cage is there to save your life and this one could cost you your life. A good friend of mine has a good friend who had a cage collapse upon him because the bends were not well thought out. Today he cannot feel anything below the neck. If this scares you, it should.

For an SCCA legal cage, there must be two rear braces (the X does not count) that must reside at an angle of at least 30 degrees.

Hey David, I saw your car a couple months ago at Stuttgart Haus - it looked real sick! Did you have to get an engine rebuild?

Sweet 951 though, especially liked the wheels!

Great link! Thanks Anders. I've been looking around for links with good photos of cages in 924/944 derivatives. The first cage (with the X brace) is pretty close to what I have planned for mine. I'd make a few detail changes for our rules, additional safety, and structural rigidity, but it's close.

I believe those cages ar in cars used in a class called "Roadsport B", a class with streetlegal cars.

I f you check the rest of the page there are some interesting information, in Swedish...

If it can help I´ll translate, the start of the page is <a href="http://hem.passagen.se/utzon/" target="_blank">here</a>.

Thanks for all the pics !! I will use my car as the test mule for the cages. I will let you know how it turns out and recommend your business at that point.

Elon,

You probably saw my car at Stuttgarthaus when I had a cam housing leak and took it in for a leak down and compression test. They severely flunked my car, said that there are most likely scratches on my piston walls, with massive blow by on the piston rings. I new my car was still running real strong, so I decided not to rebuild yet. I replaced the cam housing gasket, and designed a beautiful crankcase vent to prevent high crankcase pressures which was blowing out my gaskets. I have a check valve and K&N filter residing on top of my oil fill tube. The car is running fantastic, and I plan to really stress it out at the PCA event at Carolina Motorsport Park on October 5-6. Thanks for the comment about the wheels. The Fikse wheels really make the car look great.
