more drive train noise after new shifter ****??
Does the factory **** really dampen that much noise, I just installed a leather covered ****(bought it from auto zone) and cut the shift shaft down an inch or so. Everything is tight, no rattles and the inner rubber boot is in place. Now I can really hear the drive train, starter is louder also. Not a rattle...just the drive train hum/buzz. Its louder when I put my hand on the ****, or cover my hand over the ****.
Did anyone else have the same results?

Yeah I got that when I changed mine too. The factory **** is really the only one you can use that won't give you the extra noise and vibrations. It doesn't bother me too much or I'd probably go back to the stock one.

mine too, (momo ****), not too bad up to 75, 80 is noisy and 85 quiets down again.
unless ive got my foot kickin open the 325? hp thats ready to jump, and then a little vibration noise doesnt seem to bother anyone.

thats what I thought...I guess we can look at it as a built in mechanics stethiscope for tranny problems <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
I have very little extra noise until I put my hand on it.

I had a similar problem after replacing my clutch and was completely convinced that i needed to redo my clutch, replace my transmission and torque tube etc...
It turned out that i had slipped the rubber spacer off of the shift lever and it was vibrating against the inside of the shift *** housing making a grinding noise! Free fix and I didn't even have to get my hands dirty.

has anyone tried to cut down the shift shaft to make it square instead of rectangular, and then siliconing the **** on the shaft?
This would make a solid rubber connection and perhaps knock down some noise.

AWILSON40 That is exactly what mine did to a tee. I am using a factory **** from a 996TT. It did mount a little different than the 951 **** though. It did not use those two rubber seals. I also thought of silicone as a possibility. Any one tried this?

For those interested, last night I pulled the new ****, hacksawed the end of shift shaft so it was square. I then slipped a piece of silicone tubing over the shaft end and then siliconed the **** onto the shaft. While still not as quiet as factory, the noise is greatly reduced. The **** isnt as firmly attached to the shaft and If I tried, I'm sure I could twist it. However, I think it will work fine. If it ends up twisting, then I will try siliconing it directly to the shaft instead of slipping some tubing over the shaft first.

Doesn't someone make an adapter that take adapts the round hole in the momo **** to the flat stock shifter. I heard that there was such an animal and that it helps reduce noise but I can't find it anywhere.

Performance Products sells an round aluminum adapter for $14.95. It slips over the OE shaft. I'm using it with a MOMO ****. The **** must be isolated from the shaft to reduce noise & vibration.
