Default 944

Hi,posted on another forum but what do you guys think?Do you think the Porsche 944 will ever get status as a “classic” ,or a “investment” car? What’s so special about them, which models will be the future bank breakers, the early 944/1 or the later, the n/a or turbo. Why are they never listed in books/films/documentaries as a super car or sports car although they were “advanced” for the time. Or will it be the same as owning a 1984 Toyota corolla with no value but for the owner…..

..and yes i drive my 944 daily

All 944s have a galvanised body so they do not rust. I think this is one of the reasons they will never become classic cars in the near future Maybe in 20 years from now a very well preserved 944 will be a desired car with high value

investment car? no....money pit car? yes!

thing is though, the 944 was never a flagship car. the 911 series will always be the premier porsche model.

never understood the point of an "investment" car....i want something i can drive the ***** off of, not something i have to take care of so that maybe someday ill get more out of it than i put in.

ive spent probably 3 times what my car is worth in keeping it up and im nowhere near done..

The cars will get used up (how many get parted out now?), so eventually they will be semi rareish. Nothing crazy though.

The 914 like the 924 and 944 (some say the 928) were never seen as being true Porsches. However after decades and some rethinking the 914 is now being considered a true Porsche and becoming highly collectable. With this being said. I think history will repeat itself again and the 924 and 944 will someday get the same respect.

In the past, Porsche factory race models became collectible and eventually were valued accordingly. Therefore, the special/race model 924/944 versions have better chances to be collectible: factory Cup cars, Carrera GTS, CS, etc.

For street cars, I can see well-preserved, low-mile ones eventually keeping up with inflation. But I question whether a 944 variant will ever be collectible enough to achieve a positive financial ROI on a restoration.

Here is one at the Porsche Museum:

Yes! They are neat cars and will eventually become a collector car. I don't think that they will be worth a ton of money like the '73 '74 911 RS or the 356 Speedsters have become but I do think that they will start going up in value if left in factory like condition. In today's money, I think that you will see 951's in original factory condition going for $50,000 range and 944's going for $20,000ish say in about 15-20 years.. Just my guess.....

IMO a 944 will never become a highly valued car, they are probably at the bottom of the depreciation curve so as long as you take care of it the only costs should be maintenance and the car should bring close to the value you pay for one at current rates when time comes to sell.

They are not listed anywhere as a supercar as they are not a supercar, they are an entry level sports car. A ton of fun to own and drive, but definitely not a supercar.

Owning a 944, like anything other Porsche, should be done because you love it. I would never buy one as an investment, and we're not going to see a price explosion, but that doesn't mean they will never be collectable. IMO nice, orignal cars already are. I've been following the 944 market closely since I bought my car in 2003, and in the past few years i'm just stunned at how the selection of nice 944s has nearly dwindled. Here in the midwest, nice 944s were practically growing on trees when I bought my car in 03, but now we're lucky to see half a dozen quality cars per season come up for sale before they're quickly snatched up. Bottom of the barrel, used and abused 944s that used to fetch $1500-2000 are now moving for twice that. This pushed the values of nice n/a's to $6-10k, and good luck finding a turbo for under $10k. Either way, as the selection of quality cars continues to decline, and as the cars continue to age as gracefully as they have, interest will continue to grow for the nice original cars and I expect to see the prices rise accordingly, but slowly. The excellent parts availability really helps the 944s cause in this area as well. Now if rennlisters and Porsche enthusiasts would start viewing and talking about 944's for what they are now, a classic car from another era and not just a used Porsche, maybe people and prospective buyers will start to realize the true collectable value of 924/944's?

So why do we own a 944 if they apparently are not a"real' Porsche, they do not have supercar performance and they are not "invesrment" cars??Fun to drive...maybe but so are a Mini cooper.....unique ,no because a large number were produced and the general public think of it of a poor man's Porsche with a VW engine I treat mine like a baby, making sure she is 100% original and in showroom condition at all times emptying my pockets more than once!Maybe its the 80's era nostalgia that made me buy the 944,i don't know.....

For the masses, the 944 was just lumped in with other affordable coupes like the RX-7 and the 280Z. And to old school Porsche afficionados, it's not Porsche enough. I think that the next 5-10 years a lot of the junkers will get weeded out, and survivors might start to gain some value. When values are in the $4,000 range, it's pretty easy to gain 10% in value!

That's the thing, you talk about $4000 converted to our currency it's about 30 000 South African rand, you can't even buy a 924 for that price!I paid $12500 for my 944 here in S.A with the cheapest 944 in decent condition for about $7000 and a real old banger for $5000!!!You guys are very lucky.

Just wait.....944/928 are time-stamped and iconic. 16 Candles and Risky Business solidified that...not to mention the posters. Porsche ruled the 80's. Did you think a late 60's muscle car was going to pull $50K? These cars are in flux...being put in hands too poor to keep them proper.
