I agree the 944 coupe where there were many built (I know the earlies were ~250K world wide?) will never really appreaciate. Specialty models (Cup Cars, 944 Turbo Cab, 968 RS etc) will.

Will a 1997-98 Boxster ever be an "icon" car, so many sold they are the "new" 944. I see them for 12-14K Canadian. Folks will be buying them, autocrossing them, should be a large parts market for them for a long time, much like the early cars. There is someone in Ontario trying to sell a low mileage 84-944 for 20K, all original, I would think there is a very small market for that car. 25 years from now? WHo knows...Barret Jackson might auction for 500K :-) Its fickle...wouldn't you like to have a mint factory original El Camino to sell to fund your P-Car needs..

Maybe we should be filling shipping containers with 944s and selling them in SA?

There, corrected that for ya.

I've seen plenty of rusty ones. Especially in the Salt Belt states.

When you adjust for inflation.. no.. they won't increase in value.

Why are they never listed in books/films/documentaries as a super car or sports car although they were “advanced” for the time. Or will it be the same as owning a 1984 Toyota corolla with no value but for the owner…..

..and yes i drive my 944 daily
Nope.. never the 944 NA.

The only chance are the special 944 models. Like 944 Turbo Cup cars, 968 Turbo S, RS and maybe the Turbo S.

Even so I would never hold out any hope.

Yes.
I have two 944's that I drive. 88 944 turbo S, stock. I have owned this car since 1997 and consider it a great performance value. When I bought the car it was the best performance/price Porsche out there. I still love it today and it is somewhat rare and special. It may never be racer and special enough to worth anything, but I love it. BTW... it value has hardly changed in 13 years.

My 1984 944 is a track appliance. For just about 10 years I have tracking and racing the beast. I enjoy driving it.

And if he drove any other kind of car in Spec 944 he would be disqualified.

The term "investment car" is quite a misnomer. I'm not going to say that there is no such thing, but they make poor investments. Yes, you can occasionally luck out, and get something that turns into a Hemi Cuda. But, you'd have to keep it for 20 years, and if you take that money and invest it in a diverse portfolio, you will do better than if you "invest" in a car more than 99% of the time. Even some of the priciest muscle cars that may be bringing twice what a new car brings would have to be considered poor investments goiing back to when they were bought. For example, a car bought for $3600 in 1965 and selling for $60,000 today only yields a return of 6.5%. That is completely ignoring costs of storage, maintenance, and restoration.

In other words, we buy and drive these cars because we like them. Personally, i wish it weren't a Porsche. 911 guys look down on us for the most part. The rest of the world lumps us in with the same guys that look down on us. We're as much orphans as Fiero owners.

The 'investment' analysis is very good to think through. If you thought you made a mistake selling some now highly valued car based on what they are selling for in perfect condition, and if you factor in what it would take to have kept it in that condition, today's price would seem good. Paying $50K for some early 911 or 356 is cheap compared to owning it since new.

I think 944s will be desired in the future for what they are: Semi exotic in their concept and very reliable and efficient not to mention cool looking, comfortable and tough. Hard to beat that combo. Once the freedom haters take more options away from us and force us into committee and politician designed cars, these cars will seem ultra-cool. That is assuming we will be allowed to own them.

Im new to all this as far as the Porsche scene goes, but I just recently traded in my 08 VW Rabbit (which i was most positive I'd never do) along with the wife's 04 Passat for a new car(the reason i get to save up for a 944). I am by no means raking in the cash, yet, but If i deploy in January and get my E6, I will definitely have enough saved to drop cash on a 944T, which is what I really want. I've had money pit cars before, but quite frankly, I'm almost 30 and would rather go through owning a 944, even after reading some horror stories, than owning a newer car. Yeah i was spoiled on my Rabbit, but when i was 17, I almost had a 924. Dad said no because of the windows didn't work and the interior was kinda trashed, but I really wished we had gotten it, looking back. Ive been looking around ebay and autotrader and there are some decent and nice 944's out there, especially turbos for under 10k. Ok, maybe not in your opinion, but from what i could find in my price range, it will do. I buy a car with full intention of driving it daily. 63k miles on my 08 when i traded it in, got it in dec 07. I dont think I'll put that many miles in such a short time span, given my wife will have her Xterra and transporting the kids in that instead of my car, lol. I would definitely keep a 944T for as long as possible(forever if i have my way). Im tired of seeing the same cars on the road(cookie cutter econo-boxes) and everything seems to be slowly resembling a used bar of soap. Till I actually have a 944T of my own, I'll stick to fantasizing while playing Forza3 and building my Revell Germany model kits.

ps: the avatar is a guys car near Arlington, TX i want badly

Umm,
My 944 NA predates 944 spec. In fact I was so happy with track abilities of 944 spec was involved with creating the series from scratch. Part of the resaon the weight limit is 2600lbs is that it was where my car scaled out back in 2002 with me in the car. The reason we run camberplates I because I said we need them back in 2002.

Oh and 944 spec is popular since the cars cheap and great track appliances. In face we have increased 944 NA values. Most 944 spec are worth 5 to 10 times what an typical street car is worth.
