951 vs 928 (handling)
posting this in both the 944 and the 928 threads to avoid any biased, im wondering what car has better handling, im not asking about straight out speed im sure the 928 has that covered im looking to find out witch of the two is going to handle batter in the turns on a track or in the street. also, if the 944 does have better handling does it make up for the speed difference, would a 928 or a 944 turbo win on a windy track race?

The 928 was meant to be a touring car, the 944 was meant to be a sporty, entry level car. Comparing the two is like asking people which they prefer, apples or watermelon.
Windy track race, in stock trim, 951 wins 9 out of 10.
Handling is worlds apart, and until the 928 S4/GT/GTS, the 944T (951) had the better power to weight ratio, even on the 86, 87, and 88 non-s models, 88S and 89 model 951 no comparison.
Two totally different cars, two different purposes.
If you want a track car, buy the 951 or 944 N/A, they can and are used as daily driver cars by many.
If you want a 2 door sedan buy a 928, not a good track car, not too many used as daily drivers.
So everyone can see this I will post it on the 928 thread as well.
928 guys feel free to disagree with me, but be careful... I have owned both.

Logan, I'm not sure why you think the average 928 is faster straight-line...?
I am more then confident in saying that anything <150mph the average 951 will have no problem with the average 928.

Bear in mind the majority of 928s have automatic transmissions, whereas the majority of 944s have manual transmissions. Probably the biggest single difference in driving experience right there... there are a few manual 928s around, but I suspect they are even rarer than auto 944s.

i think you should make it clear that its stock 951 vs stock 928 of the same vintage or else that can is not only open but festering also.
once mods come into it its down to who has the deepest pockets.

I think in 3 years I have seen 3 928's at the track
They are beautiful cars and one of my favorite P-car designs....but I'll never own one.
My mechanic had one in his shop a while back...I commented about how nice it looked.
He agreed...but said 'in terms of maintenence and cost to care for...someone should just change the nameplate to JAGUAR'.

The 928 wasn't speed limited. The earlier US models might only have been capable of 140 something, but the 85 & 86 models were good for 150ish. 1987 & up were even faster.
I've got a 928, but I'd love to have a 951, too.

Having had a couple of each I would say 928. More advanced suspension, great chassis, bigger engine with more potential for reliable HP... The 951 would be cheaper to start with but running costs for both at 300HP should favor the stock V8.

1984- 147mph 0-60- 7.1 sec. 5spd.
1985-86- 158mph 0-60- 5.9 sec. 5spd.
1987-91-174mph 0-60- 5.5 sec. 5spd.
1993-1995- 181mph. 0-60 5.1 sec. 5spd.
All figures in stock trim. Add 7psi boost to to any of them and these times improve on average 1.5-2 seconds quicker. My 87 with a measley 13 psi would run an 11 sec 1/4 and 0-60 in the 3's. We just sold our 88 951 and it was a great car but a lot of maintenance, not unlike the other three we have had. My 87 928 has cost me a fuel pump and a coil in 10 years and 52k miles. 3 of these years she was boosted and driven very hard! In short, the 951 is not the car the 928 is. It is simple to understand as the manufacturer laid all that out for us when they created their line-up and priced them accordingly. It was the CGT of its day and no one dares compare a 911 to the CGT now do they? The 951, like the 911 is a terrific car no doubt, but it is no more a 928 than the 911 is a CGT.

In 1987 I'd say the CGT of the day was the 930 slant nose.....despite the fact that I loved the 928.
Kevin...I am amazed at how reliable your 928 has been....I suspect that means it's been taken good care of it's entire life....which we can't say for most 928's or 944's.
On difference I have noticed is that 928 interiors seem to fall apart more than 944's.....and I have heard electrical horror stories as well.
0 to 60 in the 3's must have been a wild ride !
