I think the funniest/scariest thing my wife ever said while I was working on a car follows.
To set the stage I was battling electrical problems on my first Porsche, a rust ridden 914 that had previously had an engine fire. The car wasn't cranking reliably. I had allready replaced the battery, starter, and alternator. This day I upgraded the wiring between the battery and starter motor to some heavy duty wire and replaced the ground strap to the transmission. After trying to crank it I got the click of denial, no turns of the engine nothing, just click. Well I had had enough for the day and started putting away my tools. My wife walked out the front door and started frantically pointing behind me, her mouth open but not really articulating anything. I turned around and the new wiring was on fire. I asked her to grab the fire extinguisher and yanked the terminal from the battery. By the time she came back with the extinguisher, the fire had burned itself out. As she hands me the extinguisher she says in a completely deadpan voice: "You are not going to burn down our house over that car."
The next week I gave the car away. I posted an add on the Pelican Parts web board for a free non-running 914 2.0 with mahle wheels and tons of spare parts. After interviewing about 15 prospective new homes I found the right guy. He had restored 6 914's and done three 914 six conversions. He brought a photo album with all his previous projects and it was gorgeous work.
When I got the 951 I called him to find out how the project was going. He said he had gotten the car running but that the rust was overwhelming. He gave the car to a fellow PCA member who was going to convert it to a tube frame racer. I hope to meet that guy some day.
