the oldest 944 update
I don't know how long ago it was that we were all posting the "born on" dates (this Bud reference is for you) of our cars, but I've finally been in touch with a person who can help me figure mine out.
Anyone who posted knows there were some discrepencies in the VIN decoders, and that at least one of us doesn't have the production number plate / sticker under the hood anymore.
So after spending a rediculous amount of time with Porsche North America, I was given a number to England so that I could access the "Rest of World Porsche Cars" database.
But the England folks couldn't find the VIN.
So they gave me the number of the headquarters customer committment line (the best of the best baby!).
Within one week (from today) I should have the answer to my questions regarding the last five digits of my VIN:
00720.
Specifically, I've been curious ever since that thread whether or not this is one of the first 944s ever to come off the production line.
So far the nice guy in Germany has confirmed that the serial numbers, and in turn the VIN numbers, do not usually start with 00001 (for Porsche anyhow). He explains that many numbers are used for development and inspection early in the production process, and that some whole blocks are never used.
...I may just have one of the first 944s made.
I'm psyched. Just wanted to share it with you all.

Mine says 5/83. VIN ends in 62050.
Surely they didn't make 62050 my May. The production figures indicate that Porsche made a total of 14633 in 1983 with 5506 imported to the US.
Anyone have an explanation?

IT'S totally NOT the oldest 944!
Here's the email I recieved from Germany today:
Check it out - Saudi Porsche!
_____________________________________________
Dear Mr. Krans
1.The Porsche bearing a.m. VIN was manufactured on 30th November 1982.
2.Approx. 4500 (four thousand five hundred) 944's were produced before
yours
because we had already started production of the 944 the previous year.
3. Retail price here in Germany was ca. 30.000 DM (15.000 Euro). We only
know
that the vehicle was built to Saudi Arabien specifications where it got
sent to.
If you would like a detailed "Birth Certificate" we can do you one but it
costs 80 euro.
Please advise accordingly with your confirmation.

why in the world would you have thought your 1983 was the first 944?
I personally would like to get said "Birth Certificate" for my cars. I have the Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche, but that would also be a cool thing to add to the collection...
who do I need to contact?
