Cool

I have to chime in here because I had this very same dilemma at one point and it came down to a very simple question. How Will You Use It? If you are going to track it 951. If you want to take long trips in it and enjoy the rumble of the V8 928.

I was actually considering selling my 928 this spring until I started it. When I heard the motor fire I fell back in love. My best friend who has a 951 was next to me when I started it and he just said on word. "Wow!"

As for the maintenance they are about the same. The 951 and the 928 both have a lot of maintenance. Neither is very cheap to own.

Now if you can swing both.......... <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

I'm with everyone else here who has said drive both and see what you want for now. Me? I would have either as long as the 928 was not an automatic. Maybe because I just had to drive them for a couple of years after I started driving (my money went to flying lessons instead), so I just hate them now. Also, for really driving on the track or spiritedly you can always control exactly what gear you are in.

I really enjoy driving both the 928 and the 951 and the sounds that both make are wonderful. The 951 for the sound of the turbo spooling up and the engine racing up the revs and the 928 for that awesome V8 rumble and howl as you get into the higher rpm range.

My odyssey ended with my first Porsche being the 951. Quite simply because in the area I had available to search in, it was the first really good and well taken care of example that I found of a Porsche in my price range, so I bought it after looking off and on for many years.

As for the question of driving, the 928 does feel heavier and seems to feel like a much bigger car when you first drive them, but I had a Toyota Supra that weighed the same and with similar dimensions and could make it sing pretty well in the corners. It always amazed me how car magazines would complain that the 928 was a big car. Same width roughly as the Camaro/Firebird and two feet shorter...yet those Pony cars were never talked about as "big" cars. So considering they are similar in weight and less capable in many ways than the 928, I would not consider the 928 a non-sports car, although I would probably call the 951 a bit more flickable with it's lighter weight.

As for doing any mods, well...the 951 you can get another 100 horses pretty easy and not too expensively, another 100hp in a 928 could be very expensive. Headers, head work, etc. on those cars seems to be quite expensive!! Especially when you often have 2 of everything instead of one as you do on the 951 like the manifolds, heads, etc.

I have to say that with it already having the 320 horsepower engine that if it had the 5 speed I would probably go after that, but in this case, I think I would go with the 951. But then again, I want one of each and a 930 as well in my garage along with a few others....hehe I'm not biased about Porsches I'll take one of each, please!

Cheers!

I was just going through your picture gallery, and my advice would be to ask Maria.

"Some guys have all the luck" -Rod Stewart (whom I never liked, but the song seems appropriate now for some reason).

Blonde Maria.

Better yet, ask both. See if they agree on the same car. If so, problem solved. <img border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" title="" src="graemlins/bigok.gif" />

This is like trying too decided between a blonde and a brunette…which one do you pick.

Now girls…don’t be getting on my case…I’m sure you are faced with the same decisions.

I say both are tasty but offer a different ride. I’ve experienced and driven both…the 951 (fancy in house code) is light on it’s feet, responds well, quick but not as solid or roomy as the 928 (Porsche in house fancy code for 928) or simply put…928 has more volume all around then the 968/951/944 series. But then again…I feel Porsche designed these series cars for different tastes. I consider them all to be very exciting cars to drive. Real problem is…some days you’ll want the 928…other days scream for the 951.

The 928 is sure footed…heavy…faster then hell…forgiving…solid…no engine buzz…

The 951 is sure footed but light on it’s feet…faster then hell…light feeling with a slight buzz in the foot pedals and gear shift but a great car all around.

I personally prefer the finish of the 928 inside and out, how it feels when pushing it around and the overall feeling I get driving a top line automobile.

Regarding maintenance…it’s going to depend on the condition of the car on purchase. In the long run the 951 may be cheaper to maintain but by really how much is the question.
