You need a daily driver that sort of rules out the 951 because it lacks A/C. Had it been otherwise I would have recommended the 951 because of the sport fun factor: Definitely the better weekend toy. The 928 is an expensive vehicle to maintain if the stars are not aligned in your favor. But if it's in great condition you might get away with minimal maintenance expense. In summary if you are counting on a daily driver you will have to prioritize on comfort, durability and economy.

This is a tough call because they are two very different cars. The 951 is a raw edged sports car and the 928 is a luxury GT. Where the 951 is a fighter plane, the 928 is a Learjet. What kind of driving are you doing? The 951 is def better if you want to mix in track time. My A/C has never worked so I wouldn't consider it a factor. The 928 is superior for effortless cruising, stop & go traffic, and long trips.
If you decide on the 928, get it thoroughly checked out by someone intimately familiar with 928's. They are extremely complex cars and when everything is right they are awesome. The electrical system is very intolerant of neglect (and bad grounds) and can be very expensive to diagnose & repair. That said, I would love to own one someday.

Go with the 951! <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" /> The 928 is expensive to maintain. I spoke with my mechanics (independant porsche) when I was looking at a 928 GT. He had enough horror stories to disuade me. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />
If you even think you might go to the track, the 951 is the better choice.

Some thoughts that come to mind:
Maintenance:
a) Isn't the 928 something of a gas guzzler? This is Europe, Anders <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
b) After a 944-S2, are you really in a big hurry to modify a 951? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />
c) 928 parts cost about 1.5 times what 944 parts do.
No A/C:
Pardon my ignorance, but is this really a big deal in Scandinavia? I mean, how hot does it get and how much of the year is it hot? I lived without A/C in my 83 944 the U.S. Midwest for years, and it did get a bit hot there, but it was livable. Spain is another story
Automatic:
I don't think you would enjoy it as much as the turbo charged 5 speed in the long run.

It's about 19 centigrades today and it has been that way for a week and it will prabably be that way until mid-september. I live about as far south as possible in Sweden and often drive around in Europe on vacations..
It is possible to live with it but spending more than 30 minutes in the car and your back is all wet.. Didn't have AC in the S2 and that and some grunt was the only thing I missed about it. Then on the other hand AC is one of those expensive things to repair..
Automatic - with a kickdown switch and the torque of the S4-V8 it will probably be just as fun as coming on boost, just different..
When it comes to modifying I'll probably do that within the first month or so... Silly and stupid maybe but these cars doesn't really seem to have any reasons why not to increase hp and with a turbo engine it's so easy..
Damn, I really wish I could get one of both..

Very well maintained 928s seem to be in short supply around here. At least ones that are for sale. Since you have owned a 944-series car before, I could see the attraction for something a little different. When I was shopping last I wasn't as impressed with the s4 as I had hoped I would be. My mechanic told me the auotmatic "soaked up" a lot of the horsepower, and I could feel what he was talking about. They are very nice cars though.
Best of luck in your decision. Will you post pictures of your new car?

Anders, what town in Sweden are you from? My ex was from a small town called Hoor (surprisingly appropriate)...visited there last year..also at the very south of Sweden, closer to Copenhagen by far than it is to Stockholm....beautiful country...

Given the choices, I would pick the 951 because the S4 is an auto. I love my 951 and 944s but the 928 is a much more heavy, solid, and substantial of a car than the 951. If you like touring, get the 928 because you can drive thru hell long distances in comfort. I drove an 87 928 with a 5 speed from El Paso, Texas to L. A., CA and I was thoroughly impressed by the comfort of the super high speed cruiser. I had my passenger sleeping while cruising between 125 to 155 mph thru some parts of Texas in that 20 hour drive more than 10 years ago. The only thing I don't like about the one you are looking at is the auto trans. I had an 1989 S4 with an auto trans and I sold it because I was bored with it after a while. If you can get the stick S4, get it instead of the 951. It is truly an awesome car.

Speaking as someone who has owned both types of cars at the same time, the 928S was always my dream car. Shortly after I bought one, the ring and pinion on my 944 decided to bite the dust, so the shark became my sole weekend/pleasure car while I repaired the other. I drove the 928S for almost a year before I wrecked it, and it didn't take much for the insurance company to consider it a total loss (although that can also be said of almost any of the Porsche series). When I finally got back in the 944, several things became evident to me. The 928 is not my dream car anymore. Although I liked it alot, both the car and controls felt "heavy", almost like a muscle car, and the torquey engine felt and sounded like one, too. I could drive it fairly comfortably near "the limit", but it's weight transfer (in stock form) also made it feel heavier. When I drove the 944 again, it felt like it was part of me, because it felt lighter and nimble and all the controls felt lighter, too. Predictability at the limit is a very comforting thing (see "911, the earlier years"). Looking back now at other things like the price of tune-up/maintenance parts, availability of parts and limited mods, it almost seems like fate intervened. If money were less of an object, I would consider maybe a 928GT, but for now, I love my 944's. Good luck with your decision.
