Default 190 mph in a 944/968.

original thread:

https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...n-a-944-a.html

posted the thread last fall on the Turbo forums... love to hear about all your high speed mods.

i'm posting because we may have a high gear source/breakthrough for the 968 G-46 box.

if this works, it becomes an option for 944s/S2s/968s with more horsepower... thinking that you'd have 5 gears for killing your enemies in most driving situations - but still have a long highway gear left in reserve for top speed runs.

the problem otherwise, being the stock .778 6th gear in the 968 doesn't cut it for cars going past 275-300 hp.

the rpms past 100 mph are too high w/ 100 mph @ 4,000 rpm, 150 mph @ 6,000 rpm, etc.

Custom fab a taller R & P and you don't have to get 'creative' with a special 6th gear.

Seems a big waste of cash for a street car.

well, i know the area around virginia, DC, maryland, delaware, new york, new jersey, and new england is the pits for even dreaming of a "once or twice in a car's life," 3:00 am top speed run... everyone is entitled to this opinion. but consider this: our cars are some of the best handling of all the Porsches...

from the 968 forum...

if the car has good roadgoing manners, then building it for 175-180 mph, is like, "why not ?"

if it's such a big waste of cash, then what justifies buying or building any of these ?

2 of my favorite Porsche videos, and 2 awesome conversions...

not talking about any 6-speeds

a 944 turbo gearbox has a 5th gear of .83. if you put the 5th gear out of an early NA in there, you can go over 190 if you have the power

they were a response to someone presenting the idea that building something better is a waste of money.

sorry, but a stock 944 that goes 130 mph isn't such earthshattering performance by today's standards.

not sure where Tony G was referenced in this thread either.

i posted to reference the audi 01e gears being a source for going with a 6 speed transmission.

of course, adding a 6 speed box is just more money wasted...

Quick Reply: 190 mph in a 944/968.
