Default 968 top speed

What is the fastest anyone has driven their 968. I went to 130 but do not think I will go any further.

I have taken mine to 153 mph which was pretty much in the red on the tach. Would I do it again, no.

Same here +1 mile=154mph (will I do it again no even thougth the car behave very well & felt stable at that speed there is no use going that fast, (but I'm sure all of us 968 owners will like to try it once just to see if the top speed claim on them is true) & telling you the true going that fast you really have to have confidence in your car suspension & tires mine is well sorte out & tires were brand new.

My run was done at private airfield so I had lot of room to stretch her out ,it pull real strong up to over 145 MPH then like you said lost a little bite of stamina but still made it to 154 MPH, there is one thing witch should be remember here the car only has 80,000KLMs or 50,000 Miles on it ,I will have hesitate doing it with the car showing 150,000 miles on the odo.

170mph indicated, about 165 or 167 on the gps...

it was a very very slight downward slope, to be fair.

165 or 167 mph with what ? a stock 968 at 154mph mine still had some go but sincerly don't believe it will had reach 165mph & driving downslop at that speed is pushing your luck.

Whether you believe it or not doesn't change the fact that it happened.

The slope was not a safety factor. I only mentioned it because it may have added 1-2mph.

Downhill or not, to hit 167 mph wouldn't a 968 with standard gearing have to be well past the rev limiter? Do you have your limiter raised/eliminated? Or do you have taller gearing?

I've hit 135 with the top down. That was enough, thanks.

Rich slow down I,m not saying I don't believe you, the question I ask is this, is your 968 motor mod or stock , because the speed you reach is some 9 MPH more that the top speed claim by Porsche for a stock 968 coupe is 156MPH has you know.

The car is 100% stock, except for a front splitter and possibly some sort of chip. I've never checked the DME box to see if it has been opened. I autox and track the car regularly, but I never bounce off the rev limiter. Actually did hit it once, but I didn't see where it maxed out at.

As was mentioned, gearing and rev limit is definitely the limiting factor. My 951 managed 175mph (indicated) with a chip, and it was bouncing off the increased rev limiter at 175mph. Although the gps showed 169mph on that one. There is obviously some variation in gauge error between the different cars. The tires probably had something to do with that.

I hope to take mine to top speed once, "and only once", so thanks for the good replies. The thing I worry about the most is lift. I just keep thinking about those Nascar cars getting a little nudge and going airborn, and they are only going about 30mph over top speed of a 968.

i have had my car at the limiter at 158 o 159 mph on i-29 in iowa. thanks to running straight 2 1/2" pipe and 25.7" tires.

my speedometer and tach are dead on running these large circumference tires.

lift ? this is not a 944. not trying to diss the 944 people as there are plenty of guys who've installed front splitters...

but there ARE problems with front end lift or "float" on the 944.

not with the 968... the car is a brick at 150... add the turbo wing and splitter, and you can go 180 mph on a smooth straight.

before going to straight pipes, my car was only able to go about 140. the problem was the over-rated exhaust and horrible cat.

i have been able to shave about 170 pounds of sprung weight off the car, (even after my stereo install), by dumping the heavy, electric seats for my sparcos, doing the rear seat delete, and eliminating the awful, 115 pound exhaust.

the exhaust i'm running now behind the headers is about 38 pounds.

i added the bigger brakes which is unsprung weight and slows the car down.

it may have the added benefit of holding everything down a bit more.
