Post 6.5" front speakers in late 944

I know that several people have mounted 6.5" speakers in early 944s. I am interested in mounting them in my late 944 and I am worried that the dash will get in the way.

Has anyone mounted 6.5" speakers in the front of a late 944?

TTT

Also interested in getting these questions answered (I've looked and looked, and alas, nothing!):

- Word/photo's of component speaker installs in late model 944's
- 2x10" sub boxes in spare tire well
- Neon light kits (jk!!)

Thanks!

I think you can do 10" in the wheel well, and 8" in each foot well. Someone on this forum sells a fitted fiberglass enclosure and an 8" Punch Z or JL W0 for the foot for $200. So a search, this was looked at a couple of weeks ago, too.

I had some 6.5s put in my doors by a local shop a couple years ago. I'll try to remember to upload them tonight (they're at home). My sub link is below.........

Hey Tabor--

Are you sure you're going to do the sub? If you are, I recommend putting 4" in the door, as the lower moving mass will give you sweeter midrange and they'll be much easier to install and keep looking stock. Let the sub do what it's designed for: slam the lows. I just put the 4" in the doors of mine and will have it looking stock this weekend (tweets flushed above the window switches). Sounds sweet but of course no bass. I'm going to do the fiberglass sub.

Scott - would appreciate some pics... If I had it done I would have a local shop do it. The guy at the shop seems pretty optimistic he could make it work, but I'd feel better if I saw some proof of it before I let them tear into my door.

The sub setup looks pretty nice too. I have a 10" sub from my previous car that I wanted to use, but I wouldn't mind setting it aside if I could get a more stealth install. Two 8"s should be punchy enough for me. Btw, where is your amp?

B - Do you have any pics of your setup? Did you mount the tweeter just above the mid in the 4x6 panel?

I was thinking that a 4" + 1" component setup in the front (and maybe a 6.5" in the rear) would be pretty sweet. But I'm not sure if I could get it all to fit under the stock grills. I've read in the FAQ about the Porsche supplied new grills that give you up to 2" mounting depth, but I've never seen any pictures.

Thanks for your help guys!

Subs are heavy, so I was going to try and avoid it. Sadly, Polk stopped selling their 4" component system. But I know I can make their 5-1/4" system fit (though not in the stock location).

How do you think a 5-1/4" system in the front and some 6x9" speakers in the rear compartments would sound? I think it will sound pretty good.

I'm not a bass freak (I listen to jazz, classical, classic rock etc.), so I don't like to overdo the bass. 5 1/4s with 6X9s will probably be nice and punchy, but won't have the ultimate low-end extension. I would still shop around for 4", especially if you're concerned about looking stock, and my speaker building philosophy is to get the optimum speakers for each task (high, mid, bass). The JBLs I got (top of the line) were on crutchfield for $50, you can match any component tweets, including Polks, with them.

I have the 6X9's over the cubbies in the rear and 4x6's in the doors and 5" component up front with the tweets in the top of the door panel and the midwoofers under the dash......and a (removeable) 10" sub in the rear, without the sub it sounds great!

Well if you want bass, get an 8" at least.. cause 6x9's aren't going to be very good.. I plan on putting in a 10" in the back (might have to customize the tire wells if I have to) and when I can afford it put in another 10". The subs are Redline 10"'s that use 350watts at 2 ohms.. and the amp I'm getting is a Crunch 800 watt amp running at 2 ohm's.. so I'll have plenty of power for the subs. When I can afford it, I'll get another amp to power my speakers and replace those too.. (after I get a top of the line security system =P )

I have a small amp stuck in the spare tire well with the wheel--there's still room to remove the wheel without messing with the amp. Another good place would be under the driver side dash.

The doors, stock, are 1 5/8" deep. There's some discussion of Radioshack 4x6 grills for $15 that give you some depth and room for a tweeter without compromising too much of a stock look. You should search for some of this stuff, it's been recently discussed and I've read some good stuff.

If you let your subs handle the low end, 4x6 should handle highs just fine...Alpine's got some that fit...Boston Acoustic...I was looking at the Blaupunkt 462xi's for about $60, they require a spacer...944s seem to be a real pain, but enough people done it so as to know what works and what doesn't...All I need is some cash...

By the way, here's a link to Slevy's custom 8" enclosures:

Crutchfield has Polk 4" components, and a lot of other 4" component setups:

<a href="http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-xo9o2r3jIgA/ProdGroup.asp?s=0&g=76100&a=0" target="_blank">http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-xo9o2r3jIgA/ProdGroup.asp?s=0&g=76100&a=0</a>

Building some custom plates and screwing in a 4" woofer and 1" tweeter on, then mounting it in the stock location with Porsche's newer speaker grills... hmmm. Sounds like the best option for keeping everything looking stock.

Scott's subwoofer boxes are looking better and better, especially if I could fit some nice 8" Kickers in there (they claim to have more punch than some 10"'s.)

Booster - you got any pics of your setup?

RacerX- The Turbo S, S2, & 968 all had the 10-speaker set-up's (might have been optional in some of them) w/the 5 1/4" & 3" behind the door pocket w/tweeter at top of door, & 6 1/2" separates in back...

Tremelune- I'm installing a small 4-chan amp under the PASSENGER side dash (above the ECU)- I'm not sure how you would install one on the driver side?

I have a Turbo S w/968 panels, and am going to install some 6 1/2's (separates) in the stock locations- I've been planing to do this forever, but should have it done in the next few weeks. To install the 6 1/2's and get them to fit behind the door pockets correctly, I plan to trim the outer mounting edge of the speaker at the top and bottom, making it ~5 1/2" tall, but the speaker will be intact...

Tabor- As for the location you're speaking of, I'm almost positive that Turbo Tim has done it- he had it on his website a long time ago. He used a thick adapter ring of some sort that mearly mounted the 6 1/2" about an inch further out of the door, as depth was the problem there, but it looked very professional from the pics. If he doesn't still have them on his site, e-mail him, and if I'm wrong, and it wasn't him, e-mail me, and I'll do my best to find out where I saw it done, b/c I KNOW I have- actually, I've seen it done by SEVERAL people, but at least one of them actually had a stereo place do it for him- they made a whole new section piece to cover up the lower area of the door panel, and fabricated it so that it stuck out a tiny bit- the pics I saw of it looked very nice too. I saw that one on the Rennlist, but the pics had nothing to do w/the speakers; I just noticed them, and e-mailed him about it- it was a long time ago. In any case, it has been done, and shouldn't be too terribly difficult..

I've thought about that 10 speaker setup.. gettign the door panels and putting them on my 86 951. DId the 968 panels fit farely easily?? Otherwise I found some Infinity Kappa 4x6 Plates.. basically separates and a round speaker will always sound better than an oval speaker.. (equal flex around the center)..

My next car will be a 968.. those are just sweet ars cars!!!
