balance shaft seals for an 84 944
are both the L and R front balance shaft seals the same for an 84 944? What about the rear o rings ?
I need to replace my seals as they are leaky and am trying to find part #'s or least some info about them.(looking on a few websites now).
Thanks,
Tom

From Clark's:
While the main balance shaft seals appear identical, there is actually a 1 mm difference in the outside diameter of the seals. Don't confuse them or you will end up doing this job again.

I ordered the kit from Paragon http://www.paragon-products.com/Fron...1.000.01-e.htm It lists all the part numbers in case you don't need the whole kit. The front upper and lower BS seals are different.

Yeah, one balance shaft spins in the opposite direction than the other, so it's a different seal. If I remember correctly, there is a little arrow on the front of the seal that shows the direction that the shaft spins.

I got a front seal kit and it did not contain the rear balance shaft o-ring, the one that is near the back of the engine. Double check to make sure the kit you ordered includes the rear o-ring. And the sealant used for the balance shaft housings is special stuff so make sure to get that too. I had to order it online, could not find it locally.

I am pretty sure the sealant I used was the 574, but double check. http://www.paragon-products.com/prod...octite_574.htm. Basically the stuff will not harden in the small oil passages, blocking the oil flow. There are some small passages along the edge of the balance shaft cover that could clog with normal sealant.

if memory serves, there are two different size oil pump seals. The parts and reference (I think) outlines when it changed by vin, but I thought it was 84' just something to check.
Been a while since I looked at the parts for my 84's front seals.

From what i seen, the passenger side seal is same size as the distributor seal so the drivers side seal is the odd ball. regarding sealants, i've got a decent selection of non hardening sealants and brush on sealants so should be no biggie. And the orings are included in what i ordered. I went local and just ordered each seal by part #.

Hello, as you reinstall the sprockets on to both balance shafts be sure to rotate each shaft so that the key is at the 12 noon position as you slide the sprocket into place . One seal is 47 mm ( top ) and the other ( lower) is 48 mm. Do not confuse them. Use the 574 sealant as a thread lock on both bolts and torque each to 35 ft/ lbs. Have fun and good luck
