Default Balance Shaft Delete (Rant)

First, I don't care if you agree with the modification or not.

I just want to say if your building a full blown race motor and your going to delete the balance shafts please don't do it this way.

What do I mean

Like this..

This simply makes no sense what so ever if your going racing the only reason to do it this way is so you can go back to stock if you so wish. However if its a race car your not going back to stock so who cares.

What way should you do it?
Simply put the balance shaft covers add no strength to the block so get rid of them. You only need the front of the lower cover (4 bolts) to hold the Power Steering bracket if you even have PS.

To do this you simply weld the 6 oil return blocks and fill in the 2 feed holes.

Whats the advantage of doing it this way?
Weight Advantage (No Bolts or 4 bolts) and No Covers!
Cost! It takes about 20min to do the mods with a welder
Oiling, The balance shafts steal oil from the main bearings so by stopping the thievery you get better oiling to your bearings.

So please do it the right way and weld the block its simple, cheap and it has advantages.

Is JB weld an option for this mod guys? I am building A track car, I dont know any local guys that tig weld on engines, isn't there a risk of cracking the block as well from welding tooo hot? I live in Sf bay area CA, you guys got any advise?

Just speaking out of my **** here but what is the size of these oil holes?

Would it be possible to tap them and run a short bolt in with loctite? Reason I ask is this could easily be accomplished with the motor in the car.

my 84 track only car is leaking from the rear of the balance shafts, from the o ring'd silver dollar sized plugs and I had planned to just elimitate the BS's before this season starts. Unfortunately I don't have a tig so unles anyone in the immediate Columbus area can bring one by my garage (I do have a keg o rater if that is usefull for bribery )

JB weld is never an option, IMO.

How do ya'll modify the pickup tubes? I spun the balance shaft bearings out hardcore in my 16V so I'll probably have no choice but to run without them. Anything else worth beefing up when running without balancers?

Anyone have any 'concerns' about tig welding the hold while the motor is still in the car? Obviously would cover up all wiring and fuel lines and such but any concerns? that sound idiotic? Hate to pull a motor to fill up a few holes. wonder if draining the oil is needed ?

Opinions ?

So on the picture of the lower balance shaft , the oiler is welded shut also correct? just can't see it. Do the stud holes need to be sealed as well or leave them alone? Anyone know good welders in SF bay area CA? (san francisco bay area California)

Kev, it's better to tap and plug the lower oil feed. Gives you the option to flush if ever needed.
If a welder is a problem look into titanium putty. I used it on one block and it's almost as strong as a weld, never leaked for me. Not cheap though.
