Side mirror glass issues

Earlier this month I went over a small bump and my driver side mirror glass fell out and shattered on the road. I had no idea this was going to happen, didn't seem loose or anything. I bought a replacement from a part out and installed it, no problem. Anyway yesterday when the passenger door was shut by a friend the same thing happened. Thankfully the glass didn't shatter although it does have a small chip in the bottom. I immediately grabbed the glass and put it in a safe place. I plan on reinstalling it, what type of adhesive should I use? Anyone else had this problem? Does the constant change in temperature (anywhere from low 20s to high 40s) here in VA have anything to do with it? Could I possibly put some small clips in each corner of the mirror in addition to the adhesive to keep this from happening again?
Thanks a lot.

No adheasive is used.
This will give you an idea of how the glass is retained.

if you need to use adheasive, try a few dabs of RTV.

Over time, the paint they use to protect the silver lets loose over time. You can peel the paint off the plastic holder which will expose the heating plates.
The mirrors are still available new, but are expensive (around $100/ea, IIRC). When mine fell out, I replaced both of mine with part number 944-731-035-06 which are convex. Helps with the driver's side blind spot without having to use one of those silly stick-on blind-spot mirrors since the factory mirrors can't be adjusted correctly.

Thanks for the responses. Yeah I need to use some type of glue, the glass fell off the backing that holds it in the mirror housing, I'll probably use the suggested permatex, thanks Mark. And that small chip in bottom of the glass, that won't spread and crack the whole piece will it?

Oh thats right, I remember you telling me about that two-part epoxy, thanks John, I'll go ahead and use that stuff. I'll run by Walgreens tomorrow and pick some up. Yeah I'll go ahead and check the other one and see if I can't throw some epoxy behind both of them. Thanks guys.
