Post Blue smoke, not good....

Ok, the 951 went out for a quick warm up drive to bleed the cooling system, (bleeder valve broke, but that is another post), and I noticed some blue smoke.

I know that means i'm buring oil, but I kind of want to run through the possible causes. I'm sure it means i am heading towards a rebuild. But I kind of want to play out all the possiblities.

Ian, that may be just typical of the car having been parked for an extended period, oil would settle and initially it may smoke a bit. If it continues to smoke a head rebuil may be in order.

I can handle that one, a head rebuild is better than a complete motor rebuild, actually the thought of the latter is going to give me nightmares tonight.

Yeah, could be valve stem seals, or the turbo...

Since your car isn't driven often, I wouldn't sweat it unless it continues and/or gets worse. Drive it for a while and then make the decision. Bleed the radiator, check, bleed again, check, bleed again. That can be an exasperating chore.

My 951 smokes too, but only at WOT. Turbo!

I can live with it...

Dave,

I would bleed the system, but the bleeder bolt broke, I need a new one (in all your spares do you have one?)

Yeah, i'm not too worried about the smoke yet, but it seemed to pick up as I drove it today.

Keith,

I don't think it is the turbo, the turbo has 5k on it, if the PO toasted the turbo in 5k with a workign water pump i would be surprised.

Hopefully it is just the head, we will see when she gets running again.

I'm no expert at the 944 turbo but i think that a head gasket can also be a suspect too But that comes with the head rebuild. If you haven't gone Wide-Fire Ring i'd recommend it.

Usually this means bad valve guides, but 951 can also pop off valve stem seals.Have seen this couple of times.

Thanks all,

I'm glad a head rebuild will probably take care of all these problems, thanks for the info fellas.

Just an excuse to have the head gone through with a good 5 angle valve job, and everything freshened up. Now to the problem of paying for it.
