Default slow speed fan resistors

My cooling fans are still not running on low speed even with a new relay. I suspect the slow speed fan resistors to be the culprit. Clark's is talking about that resistor being on the firewall behind the glove box. Does anyone know where I can see a picture of what this thing looks like or a good enough description so I can check the right part? There's a bunch of electrical stuff back there.

If the fan is running on low speed, the resistors are fine. The low speed resistors are bypassed ( the relay just puts a short across the to leads of each resistor) when running high speed by the fan relay.

Thanks for the info Brian but my problem is that the fans DO NOT run on low speed...never.

In 86, the resistors were in the car by the glove compartment. In 87, they were put in the engine compartment under the plastic cover above the firewall, next to the battery. I haven't looked at a 89S2, but I would guess they are in the same place as the 87. If you have not seen them before, look for two hockey puck sized objects mounted on a metal plate.

Everything you need to troubleshoot the fans circuit is at the fan relay. Both side of the resistors come into the relay. The terminals on the fan relay for the resistors are V1 and M1, V2 and M2. The resistance of the resisters is 0.9 ohms but with the wires it will be between 1 and 2 ohms. Just pull the relay out and measure those terminals.

This is what they look like on an 86. After they move it into the engine compartment, they dropped the little round black parts which were thermal limit switches and just have the two puck resistors.

I just measured the resistance between M1 and V1 as well as between M2 and V2 and I get infinity. Looks like the resistors are to blame but still can't find those. Looked under the plastic cover around the battery and under the dash behind the glove box. Don't see anything that looks like that

Found this for the S2:

The resistor pack on the top of the blower motor are for the internal fan motor. Look for the pucks. There true name is a disk resistors.

This is weird, I do see pictures of the 2 resistors behind the battery just under the base of the windshield but that's not where they are on my car. I will take a look again under the dash being the glove box because the wires I see on the pictures going to the resistor is going through the firewall in the cabin on my car. So the resistors must be under the dash.

Did the low speed fans ever work since you have had the car?

I don't think so, I've notice only this year when I started doing some DE. I also removed the valve cam cover and I think I have over heating damage...the paint is pealing off.

I am thinking that someoned remove the resistor packs. I would be very surprised if you find them inside the car since they were moved to the engine area in 87. The link in #8 is for the same year and model as your car. The connections to the resistors are spade lugs, see if you find four of them tucked away.

Well Brian you where right... Took my son to find those but they where just being the battery underneat the windshield edge. And take a look at the poor state those are in. I have some electrical work to do replacing those overheated wires

Glad you found it. Those wire look cooked, a real common problem. Those resistor get real hot. I would guess about 100 watts of power is dropped in them.

Years ago at 944online there was a thread on the cooking of the wires leading to the resistor pack. Common problem on later year cars. Bon travail Bruno! Good work! On to the next issue.
