I have searched and cannot find any inexpensive "lap timer" system. I guess I thought that with all this GPS there would be a cheap system. They look expensive to me at $600. Is there any super cheap system?
Thanks

if yer serious about it, then yea $600 is prob the lower boundary for a whole standalone system
but if yer just curious, u can get windows mobile pocket pc based solutions for under $300.

Back in the pre-cell phone dinosaur era I velcroed a stopwatch to the steering wheel.
Now I use RaceChrono on an S60 Nokia - you can probably get an old E62 very cheap. Bluetooth GPS and you're ready to go. I bet you could do it for under $100.00

I second Maxqdata (GPS system) and went the DIY route.
I downloaded to the application onto my cell phone (Windows OS and Bluetooth) and paid for the 5Mhz unlock code. $29
The went on ebay and picked up a GPS receiver (must support bluetooth, go with their recommended list) for about $70
Read the manual, configured the settings and walla..data
Here is the link to the DIY:

They also started to support video with data overlay. They have a forum and wikki where users provide valuable feedback and have great support.
